The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Service Delivery Analyst / Service Manager (L3)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Mastering the end-to-end management of specific services, leading P2/P3 incidents, performing robust RCAs, and mentoring junior team members. You'll need to demonstrate consistent delivery and a knack for problem-solving.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully owned the health of 2-3 critical services for over 2 years, with demonstrable improvements.
- Consistently led RCAs that resulted in systemic fixes and prevented recurrence.
- Received strong positive feedback on your mentorship and informal leadership of junior colleagues.
- Proactively identified and proposed solutions for operational inefficiencies, not just reacted to them.
- 2
IT Operations Lead / Manager (from another department)
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- Translating technical operations expertise into service delivery processes, understanding ITIL frameworks, and developing strong stakeholder management skills with business units. You'll need to show you can adapt your leadership to a service-centric view.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed an IT Operations team, consistently meeting uptime and performance targets.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing operational processes, even if not strictly ITIL-aligned previously.
- Strong track record of collaborating with service delivery teams and understanding their challenges.
- A clear desire to move into a process- and service-focused leadership role.
- 3
Consultant (ITSM / Operations Consulting)
2-4 yearsSkills to master
- Applying ITSM best practices across various client environments, developing strong client-facing communication skills, and delivering structured process improvement projects. You'll need to show you can transition from advising to actually owning and implementing.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led multiple ITSM implementation or optimisation projects for clients.
- Developed expertise in specific service management tools (e.g., ServiceNow) and process methodologies.
- Received excellent client feedback on your ability to understand their operational challenges and propose effective solutions.
- A desire to move from a project-based consulting role to a permanent, hands-on leadership position within an organisation.
