A manifesto for learning that honours the brain.

Begin01 · The word we've been missing
There's a word for teaching that works with the brain. We had to make it.
For as long as there has been schooling, we have named the way we teach after the people we teach. We just never had a name for teaching that starts with the organ doing the learning.
Pedagogy comes from the Greek for leading a child. Andragogy (Malcolm Knowles' word) is the leading of adults, who learn differently because they arrive with a life already lived. Heutagogy, from Hase and Kenyon, is self-determined learning: the learner in the driving seat. Three good words, each one hard-won, each one a small act of respect for who is actually in the room.
But not one of them names the thing that has quietly changed everything: that we now understand, in real detail, how a brain actually takes something in and holds onto it. That understanding deserves its own word. So here is ours.
Neurogogy

The science and practice of designing learning systems that work with the brain rather than against it (every brain, not the imaginary average one) and that can prove what they do with evidence, not vibes.
02 · The wound
Mira was eight when someone told her who she was
A teacher (not a cruel one, probably a tired one) looked at her work and said she wasn't a maths person. That was all. And Mira believed it instantly, the way children always believe the adults in the room, because at eight you do not yet know that a grown-up can be confidently, catastrophically wrong about you.
She put down her pencil. Not with a decision (children don't decide these things) but with a quiet, total withdrawal, the way you stop reaching for a stove you've been burned on. And she did not pick it up properly again for fourteen years.
She was twenty-two when a kind tutor, working through something with her one evening, said an ordinary thing that turned out to be the truth: she wasn't bad at maths. She was bad at the maths she'd been taught: too fast, too loud, too abstract, with no story attached to hold it. Change how it arrived, and the whole thing arrived.
It is not them. It is us.
Those fourteen years were not a learning problem. They were a teaching problem, dressed up as a fact about a child. And here is the part that should keep us up at night: there are millions of Miras. Sitting in classrooms and training rooms right now, quietly concluding that the thing they can't do the way it's being taught is a thing they simply can't do.
I have met so many of them as adults. They apologise for it. "I'm just not technical." "I was never any good at that." I have learned to hear, underneath the apology, an eight-year-old who was misfiled.
03 · Bloom's unanswered letter
We have known the answer for forty years. We just couldn't afford it.
In 1984, Benjamin Bloom published a finding so clean it reads almost like a provocation. Take an ordinary learner and give them one-to-one tutoring paired with mastery learning (don't move on until they've got it) and the average student rises to the top two per cent. Two standard deviations. Two sigma.
Read that again slowly. Not the gifted few. The average learner, moved to the top of the class, by nothing more exotic than being taught one-to-one, at their own pace, until it clicked.
The paper has been cited thousands of times. And the system it described? It changed not at all. Because one-to-one tutoring for everyone was, for forty years, an impossible arithmetic: a luxury for the wealthy and a fantasy for the rest.
Two sigma. Human potential, lost for want of a way to pay for it.
So Bloom left the field a letter, and it went unanswered for a generation: what would it take to give every learner what only the wealthy could afford? Not a slogan. A design brief. The whole of neurogogy is an attempt to finally write back.
04 · One in five brains
There is no average brain. We built a whole system pretending there was.
The uncomfortable engine under the two-sigma problem is that we design learning for a person who does not exist: the average learner, moving at the average pace, holding the average amount in mind. Everyone else (which is to say, everyone) is served badly at the edges and told the fault is theirs.
The evidence for this is not subtle. It's worth wearing lightly, but it's worth knowing.
Sit with that. Working memory, how much you can hold and juggle at once, is small (about four things at a time) and differs markedly from one person to the next. And we teach them all at a single speed, in a single register, and read the ones who fall behind as less able rather than differently built.
Here is the turn, and it's the hopeful one. When you design for the one-in-five first, for the neurodivergent learner (the one the average system fails most reliably), you don't build something niche. You build something better for everyone. Clearer structure, a pace that flexes, more than one way in. The kerb cut that was cut for wheelchairs is used by everyone with a suitcase, a pram, a bad knee. Learning is no different.
Design for the edges, and the middle comes free.
05 · The fancy search engine
Most "AI in learning" is a search engine in a warm tone of voice
I want to be careful here, because the temptation is to oversell the machine, and the truth is more interesting than the hype. The first wave of AI in education is, frankly, a bit embarrassing, and pretending otherwise helps no one.
What we mostly have are chatbots that perform teaching without doing it. They answer the question you asked; they don't notice the misconception underneath it. They log a completion rate that measures whether you reached the end of a page, not whether anything changed in your head. They offer "personalisation" that turns out to be a choice between three pre-made tracks: a menu, not a tutor.
A search engine in a warm tone of voice.
None of that honours the brain. It automates the surface of teaching (the talking part) while quietly ignoring the part that actually does the work: watching a real person struggle, understanding why, and changing the next thing you say because of it. That's not a nice-to-have. That's the whole job. It's what the tutor did for Mira at twenty-two, and no amount of confident prose is a substitute for it.
06 · Why now
Four things came true at once. That's why this is a movement and not a memo.
Neurogogy isn't new because someone finally coined the word. It's possible now because four things that were never true together suddenly are.
The technology finally caught up
For the first time, a machine can deliver something close to the functional equivalent of one-to-one tutoring (adaptive, patient, responsive) at the marginal cost of a software interaction. Bloom's impossible arithmetic just became possible. That is not a small thing. That is the constraint that held the field down for forty years, lifting.
The first wave is embarrassing enough to react to
The gap between what AI in learning promises and what it delivers is now wide enough to see plainly. Embarrassment is useful. It's the feeling that comes right before people demand better.
Neurodiversity reached the mainstream
A generation is discovering, often as adults, that their brains were never broken, just badly served. The language for it is now everywhere. The appetite for learning that fits is real, and it's loud.
And frankly, the species can't afford the waste
Every misfiled Mira is a capability the world needed and didn't get. We are facing problems that will take every good brain we have. We cannot keep discarding them at eight years old over a bad afternoon with a fraction.
07 · The proof
A manifesto with no working product is just a mood. So we built one.
I'm wary of manifestos that never have to survive contact with reality. So let me be plain about where we stand: Zavmo is the working product behind this thesis. Everything above is not a wish. It's a design brief we've been building against, and it holds up where it matters most, which is in the results.
Field evidence · Centrica pilot
Not a demo. A real workforce, learning in a way that flexed to them, and finishing, because finishing finally felt possible.
The completion number matters less as a statistic than as a tell. When nearly everyone finishes, it usually means the thing stopped fighting them, stopped running at one pace, in one register, for one imaginary average person. That's neurogogy doing its quiet work. Not magic. Just teaching that finally met people where they actually were.
08 · A letter to the next Mira
To the next eight-year-old about to be told who she is
You are not a maths person, someone will say, or a reading person, a science person, a words person. And because you are eight, you will believe them. You will put down the pencil.
I need you to know that they are describing the teaching, not the brain. The pace was wrong, or the noise, or the order, or the story that would have made it hold. Change how it arrives and it arrives. That was always true. What's new is that we can finally do something about it at scale.
For the whole of human history, the best teaching (the patient, one-to-one, don't-move-on-until-you've-got-it kind) belonged only to the people who could pay for it. Bloom proved four decades ago what it could do, and then we all watched it stay out of reach.
For the first time, the best teaching doesn't have to belong only to the wealthy.
That's the whole of it. That's why we made a word for it, and why we're building the thing the word describes. Not so a machine can pretend to teach you, but so that the fourteen years Mira lost need never be lost by anyone again.
You were never bad at it. You were just waiting for it to be taught to you. We're here now.
