3What this role really is

An innovation analyst supports the process behind new ideas, making sure they get seen, tracked and followed up. You keep the platform and process running, help people submit and develop ideas, and make sure nothing falls through the gaps. It is a foundational role in how a large organisation manages innovation.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

Planview (Spigit), Brightidea, or similar Idea Management Platform Intermediate

You'll be setting up campaigns, triaging ideas, managing user accounts, and pulling standard reports. You'll know your way around the interface and can troubleshoot common user issues.

You'll be helping set up pre-defined workshop templates, organising sticky notes from brainstorming sessions, and exporting findings for the team. You'll be comfortable navigating these digital whiteboards.

You'll use Excel for basic data cleaning, simple lists, and perhaps creating very straightforward tables. You should be comfortable with basic formulas like SUM, AVERAGE, and simple sorting/filtering.

You'll be creating tickets for promising ideas that move into development, tracking their status, and updating fields as instructed by project leads. You'll know how to navigate a project board.

Slack or MS Teams Intermediate

You'll be running campaign announcements in relevant channels, answering quick user questions, and collaborating with your team. You're comfortable with instant messaging and channel management.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Idea Categorisation & Assignment Follows established rules and templates. Escalates ambiguous cases to manager. Independently categorises most ideas. Proposes new categories or rules as needed. Defines and refines the categorisation framework. Trains junior staff on best practices.
User Support & Troubleshooting Resolves basic, common queries using FAQs. Escalates anything complex or technical. Independently resolves most user issues. Identifies recurring problems and suggests solutions. Designs support processes and knowledge base. Handles escalated complex user issues.
Reporting & Data Extraction Pulls standard reports from existing templates. Asks for clarity on data requests. Creates custom reports based on requirements. Performs basic data analysis to highlight trends. Defines key reporting metrics and dashboard requirements. Ensures data integrity across systems.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Idea Submission Triage Rate
The percentage of new ideas you review, categorise, and assign to the correct challenge or evaluator within a set timeframe.
Target · 95% within 48 hours of submission

If 100 ideas come in this week, you'll need to have 95 of them sorted and assigned by Wednesday afternoon. We're not expecting you to evaluate them, just get them to the right place.

User Query Resolution Time
How quickly you respond to and resolve questions from employees about the idea platform or specific challenges.
Target · Average of 4 hours for initial response, 24 hours for resolution

Someone asks 'How do I submit an idea?' at 10 am. You should reply by 2 pm. If it's a trickier 'My login isn't working' query, you'll need to have it sorted or escalated to IT by 10 am the next day.

Campaign Participation Support
Contributing to the successful launch and ongoing support of innovation challenges, measured by the number of active participants.
Target · Achieve >20% employee participation rate in targeted innovation challenges (where you've supported the comms/onboarding)

For our 'Future of Work' challenge, if 1,000 employees are invited, we're aiming for at least 200 to submit ideas or engage with others' ideas. Your clear instructions and quick support help make this happen.

Data Accuracy in Reports
The reliability of the basic reports you pull from the idea management platform.
Target · Less than 2% error rate in monthly reports

When you pull the 'Top 10 Ideas' report, the numbers for submissions, comments, and votes need to be spot on. A mistake here means we're making decisions on bad data, which isn't good.

User Satisfaction (Platform Support)
How happy employees are with the help and guidance you provide regarding the idea management platform.
  • Positive feedback in informal conversations, direct thank you emails, and high scores on any internal surveys related to platform support. Your manager will also pick up on this in their regular check-ins with you.
Organisational & Documentation Quality
How well you keep internal processes and documentation updated, making it easier for others to understand and use.
  • Your team members can easily find and use the guides you've updated. You'll proactively spot gaps in our 'how-to' documents and suggest improvements, rather than just waiting to be told. Things like clear categorisation of ideas and well-maintained user lists show this.
Proactive Issue Identification
Your ability to spot potential problems with the platform or processes before they become bigger issues.
  • You might notice a recurring user error and suggest a fix, or spot that a certain type of idea isn't being categorised correctly by others. It's about flagging things to your manager, not just waiting for them to break.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Learning & Growth

You'll be excited to learn new software, understand innovation methodologies, and pick up tips from more experienced colleagues. You'll actively seek out ways to improve your skills, perhaps by asking for more complex tasks or reading up on new tools.

After a week, you've already figured out a quicker way to categorise ideas in Planview and shared it with the team. You're always asking 'how does this work?' or 'why do we do it this way?'

Making an Impact through Support

You'll get a real buzz from knowing your organised efforts help others succeed. Seeing a successful innovation challenge, knowing you helped hundreds of employees participate, will be genuinely rewarding for you.

An employee thanks you for helping them fix a submission error, and later you see their idea being discussed by senior leaders. You know your support made that possible.

Structured & Purposeful Work

You appreciate clear instructions and well-defined processes. You're happy to follow established guidelines and enjoy the satisfaction of completing tasks accurately and on time, knowing they contribute to a larger goal.

You've got a checklist for setting up new campaigns, and you diligently go through each step, making sure nothing is missed. You enjoy the routine of daily triage because it brings order to the incoming ideas.

What frustrates people
  • Dealing with users who haven't read the instructions (yes, it happens a lot).
  • The occasional platform glitch that requires IT support, slowing things down.
  • Having to explain the same basic process multiple times a day.
  • Seeing a really interesting idea come through, but knowing your role is just to process it, not to develop it.
What this role does not give you
  • Direct ownership of innovation projects or business outcomes.
  • High-level strategic decision-making authority.
  • A fast-track to management without proving foundational capabilities first.
  • A role where every day is completely different and unstructured.

8Who you work with

This role directly impacts employee engagement with our innovation efforts. If ideas are handled well and employees feel supported, they'll keep contributing. If not, they'll disengage, and we'll miss out on valuable insights from across the company. You're essentially the gatekeeper ensuring the initial flow of creativity isn't blocked.

Inside the business
  • Employees across all business units (the idea submitters)
  • Innovation Program Coordinators and Strategists (your immediate team)
  • Internal Communications team (for challenge promotion)
  • IT Support (for platform issues)
Outside the business
  • None directly, this is purely an internal-facing role.

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • A genuine interest in innovation and how businesses grow.
  • Excellent organisational skills – you're naturally tidy and methodical.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace).
  • A 'can-do' attitude and a willingness to learn new things every day.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced Idea Platform Administration

As you get more experienced, you'll be expected to do more than just basic setup. You'll need to understand how to configure workflows, manage user permissions more deeply, and even suggest improvements to the platform's functionality.

Workflow Customisation · User Role Management · Integration Basics

  • This week: Ask your manager to walk you through the 'admin' side of our idea platform, not just the user-facing part.
  • This month: Read the admin guides for our idea management software. They're usually pretty detailed.
  • Month 2: Suggest a small improvement to a workflow or user permission setting.
  • Month 3: Take on a task that involves configuring a new feature or setting within the platform.

Quick win: Offer to take over the monthly user audit on the platform. It's a great way to get familiar with the administrative backend.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Attend internal innovation workshops and webinars to deepen your understanding of our methodologies.
  • Take online courses on platforms like Coursera or LinkedIn Learning covering topics like 'Introduction to Design Thinking' or 'Data Visualisation Basics'.
  • Seek out opportunities to shadow more senior team members to see how they handle complex tasks or stakeholder interactions.
  • Join relevant professional communities or forums online to learn from others in the innovation space.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Innovation Analyst is actually changing.

Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, some parts of managing ideas can be a bit of a grind. But what if you could offload the repetitive stuff and focus on the more interesting parts of the job? That's where AI comes in. We're not talking about robots taking over, but smart tools that help you get through your workload faster and more accurately.

For an Innovation Analyst, AI isn't just a buzzword; it's a practical assistant. You'll use these tools to cut down on the manual work, making sure you're spending your time on what really matters: supporting our innovators and keeping the platform organised. It's about working smarter, not harder, and we'll show you how.

Idea Triage & Clustering

Imagine thousands of ideas pouring in. Instead of manually sifting through them, AI can automatically screen submissions for duplicates, categorise them by strategic theme, and even flag high-potential ideas based on criteria you help define. It's like having a super-fast assistant for your initial review.

Basic Thematic Trend Analysis

Once ideas are categorised, AI can help you spot emerging trends or common themes across submissions that a human might miss. You'll be able to quickly pull insights like 'most ideas this quarter are about sustainability' without having to read every single one in detail.

Rapid Background Research Support

When an idea looks promising, you can use generative AI tools to quickly gather initial background information. Think market sizing, quick competitor checks, or even summarising existing internal reports – getting you a brief overview in minutes, not hours.

Drafting Feedback & Comms

You'll often need to draft messages for users, whether it's a 'thank you for your idea' or a simple 'here's how to fix your submission'. AI can help you draft empathetic, clear, and consistent communications at scale, freeing you up from staring at a blank email screen.
