The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Senior Finance Operations Manager (Large Enterprise)
3-5 years in previous roleSkills to master
- Mastery of a specific finance operations domain (e.g., global P2P), proven track record of managing large teams, experience with system implementations, and a clear ability to influence senior stakeholders.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a significant process improvement or automation project that delivered measurable cost savings or efficiency gains.
- Consistently exceeded KPIs for their specific function (e.g., DPO, invoice processing costs).
- Developed and mentored at least two direct reports into more senior positions.
- Demonstrated ability to present complex operational issues and solutions to senior leadership effectively.
- 2
Head of Finance Transformation / Programme Manager
4-6 years in previous roleSkills to master
- Deep expertise in change management, project management (especially for finance system rollouts), process re-engineering, and a strong understanding of how technology can drive finance efficiency. Less direct operational management experience might be acceptable if transformation experience is exceptional.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed an end-to-end ERP implementation or major finance system upgrade.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex project timelines and budgets.
- Demonstrated skill in identifying and quantifying business benefits from transformation initiatives.
- Strong track record of stakeholder engagement and managing resistance to change.
- 3

You're ready to move on when
- Full ownership of the finance function for a smaller entity or business unit, including operational and strategic aspects.
- Experience presenting financial performance and strategic initiatives to a board or executive committee.
- Demonstrated ability to build and manage a complete finance team.
