The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

- Owning specific change workstreams (e.g., communications, training) for small to medium projects, facilitating workshops, and engaging directly with business stakeholders. You'd be getting really good at executing the plan.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering high-quality change management deliverables on time and to standard.
- Proactively identifying and escalating people-related risks with proposed solutions.
- Receiving positive feedback from project managers and stakeholders on your ability to support change.
- Demonstrating a solid understanding of a core change management methodology.
- 2
External Management Consultant (with Change Focus)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Working on client-facing change projects, often across different industries. You'd bring a broader perspective on change challenges and solutions from various external engagements.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managing client relationships and expectations on change projects.
- Developing robust, client-ready change strategies and deliverables.
- Adapting quickly to new client environments and business challenges.
- Demonstrating strong analytical and problem-solving skills in diverse contexts.
- 3
HR Business Partner or L&D Specialist (with Project Experience)
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- Deep understanding of employee relations, talent management, and learning principles. You'd have experience leading HR-related projects and managing the people impact of organisational shifts, but perhaps less formal change methodology application.
You're ready to move on when
- Leading successful HR or L&D transformation projects.
- Demonstrating strong stakeholder management within the business.
- A clear passion for and understanding of the 'people side' of change.
- A willingness to learn and apply formal change management methodologies rigorously.
