The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior XR Engineer (L3)
7-10 yearsSkills to master
- Deep expertise in a specific XR domain (e.g., rendering, interactions), leading complex workstreams, mentoring junior engineers, and making sound technical decisions within project scope.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led the end-to-end delivery of multiple complex XR features or systems.
- Consistently identified and resolved significant technical challenges without extensive supervision.
- Actively mentored 1-2 junior engineers to a higher level of autonomy and skill.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills, particularly in articulating technical trade-offs to product teams.
- 2
Staff XR Engineer (L4)
4-7 yearsSkills to master
- Architecting entire XR projects, solving the hardest technical problems, setting technical direction for a team or project, and influencing cross-functional stakeholders.
You're ready to move on when
- Architected and delivered a major XR product or platform from concept to launch.
- Recognised as the go-to expert for complex technical challenges across multiple projects.
- Effectively influenced product and design decisions based on technical feasibility and long-term vision.
- Built and led a small team or managed a significant technical programme, demonstrating leadership potential.
- 3
Technical Architect (from a related domain)
5-8 yearsSkills to master
- Translating broad business requirements into scalable technical architectures, deep understanding of distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and real-time performance. Needs to quickly acquire XR-specific domain knowledge.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven track record of architecting complex, high-performance software systems in a related field (e.g., gaming, real-time simulation, distributed computing).
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new technical domains and paradigms.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, capable of guiding multi-disciplinary teams.
- A genuine passion for XR and a clear vision for its application in our industry.
