The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior CSR Specialist / Senior Sustainability Consultant
5-8 years of prior experienceSkills to master
- Leading complex workstreams, managing projects end-to-end, developing robust reporting methodologies, mentoring junior staff, and presenting to mid-level management. You'll need to show you can take full ownership of significant parts of our sustainability agenda.
You're ready to move on when
- You've successfully managed at least 2-3 major sustainability projects from inception to completion.
- You're regularly sought out by peers for advice on complex ESG issues.
- You've consistently delivered high-quality, auditable ESG data and reports.
- You've taken initiative to improve processes or introduce new methodologies in your previous roles.
- 2
ESG Manager (from a smaller organisation)
6-10 years of prior experienceSkills to master
- Adapting to a larger, more complex organisational structure, influencing across diverse departments, scaling programmes, and managing more significant budgets and teams. You'll need to demonstrate strategic thinking beyond just operational execution.
You're ready to move on when
- You've owned the entire ESG strategy for a smaller company, showing breadth of knowledge.
- You've successfully navigated resource constraints and built programmes with limited budgets.
- You're comfortable presenting to executive-level stakeholders and external partners.
- You've built and managed a small team, even if informally.
- 3
Management Consultant (with ESG specialisation)
7-12 years of prior experienceSkills to master
- Translating theoretical frameworks into practical, implementable programmes within a corporate setting, navigating internal politics, and building long-term relationships beyond project scopes. You'll need to show you can 'do' as well as 'advise'.
You're ready to move on when
- You've led multiple ESG strategy projects for diverse clients, demonstrating broad industry exposure.
- You're skilled at stakeholder management and driving consensus in complex environments.
- You can demonstrate a track record of delivering tangible, measurable outcomes, not just recommendations.
- You're keen to move from an advisory role to an in-house role where you can truly own the impact.
