The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Sourcing Manager / Category Lead (L4)
3-5 years as an L4Skills to master

You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 multi-million pound sourcing projects from end-to-end.
- Consistently hit or exceeded category savings targets for 3+ years.
- Received positive feedback from senior stakeholders on your strategic insights and collaboration.
- Taken initiative to improve processes or mentor others without being asked.
- 2
From Consulting (Procurement/Supply Chain Focus)
5-7 years in a senior consulting roleSkills to master
- You'd need to have led major procurement transformation projects for clients, managed project teams, and developed strong client relationships. The challenge here is adapting to the 'doing' rather than just 'advising'.

- Led multiple procurement strategy or transformation engagements.
- Managed client relationships at a senior level (Director/VP).
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead project teams.
- Proven track record of delivering measurable value for clients.
- 3
From a Senior Role in a Related Function (e.g., Finance, Operations)
7-10 years in a senior role, with commercial exposureSkills to master
- You'd need a strong commercial background, an understanding of P&L management, and experience leading teams. You'd have to quickly get up to speed on core procurement methodologies (sourcing, category management) and supplier dynamics.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a significant P&L or budget in a commercial function.
- Led and developed a team of 5+ professionals.
- Demonstrated strong negotiation and commercial acumen.
