How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Procurement Analyst / Buyer (Internal)
2-3 years as an Analyst/BuyerSkills to master
- Independently running RFQs and simple RFPs, strong data analysis skills, basic contract review, and effective stakeholder communication for routine requests. Basically, proving you can reliably deliver on assigned work.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering on sourcing projects for non-strategic categories with minimal supervision.
- Proactively identifying issues and proposing solutions, not just escalating problems.
- Demonstrating a keen interest in understanding market dynamics and supplier capabilities.
- Successfully mentoring new joiners or providing informal guidance to peers.

From Commercial / Sales Support Role (External)
3-5 years in a commercial role with some exposure to contracts or vendor managementSkills to master
- Understanding the supplier's perspective, strong negotiation fundamentals, commercial acumen, and a good grasp of contract terms. You'll need to learn our internal procurement processes quickly.
You're ready to move on when
- A track record of successful negotiation outcomes, even if not in a formal procurement setting.
- Strong business acumen and understanding of how commercial decisions impact the P&L.
- Excellent relationship-building skills with external parties.
- A clear desire to move into a buying-side role and learn the strategic sourcing methodology.

From Junior Category Manager (Smaller Organisation)
2-4 years in a similar role at a smaller company or a specific business unitSkills to master
- Experience managing a full category (even if smaller scope), developing basic category strategies, and leading negotiations. You'll need to adapt to our scale and complexity.
You're ready to move on when
- Demonstrated ownership of a spend category, including strategy and supplier management.
- Experience leading end-to-end sourcing projects with measurable results.
- Ability to work independently and make informed decisions within your scope.
- A desire to take on larger, more complex categories and work with more sophisticated tools.
