The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
International Purchasing Specialist (Level 2) at Zavmo
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- You'd have mastered managing a portfolio of non-critical suppliers, running RFQs for standard goods, and handling day-to-day logistics coordination. You'd also be consistently hitting your PO accuracy and on-time delivery targets.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeds performance metrics for your current role.
- Proactively identifies and proposes solutions for supply chain issues, not just escalating them.
- Demonstrates initiative in taking on more complex tasks or mentoring new joiners.
- Actively seeks out opportunities to lead smaller projects or negotiations.
- 2
Senior Buyer / Sourcing Specialist in a smaller company
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- You'd have experience managing full sourcing cycles, negotiating contracts, and dealing with international suppliers, but perhaps with less formal structure or smaller spend categories. You'd bring a 'wear many hats' mentality.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven track record of independent negotiation and contract management.
- Experience with end-to-end sourcing projects, even if for smaller values.
- Comfortable working with less defined processes and able to adapt quickly.
- Strong desire to apply your skills in a more structured, larger-scale environment.
- 3
Logistics Specialist or Supply Chain Analyst
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- You'd have a deep understanding of the 'how' goods move around the world, but less direct experience with commercial negotiation or supplier relationship management. You'd need to build up those commercial muscles.
You're ready to move on when
- Exceptional analytical skills, particularly in landed cost and logistics optimisation.
- Strong understanding of Incoterms, customs, and international freight.
- Demonstrated interest in moving into the commercial side of the supply chain.
- Proactive in learning about procurement strategies and negotiation tactics.
