The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Lead Category Manager (L4)
3-5 years as an L4Skills to master
- At L4, you'd have mastered complex category strategy. To step up to Director, you need to prove you can manage multiple categories as a portfolio, lead other managers, and influence at a true executive level. It's less about individual sourcing wins and more about systemic impact.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully developed and implemented a multi-year strategy for a highly strategic category with demonstrable P&L impact.
- Consistently mentored and developed junior team members, with clear examples of their growth.
- Led significant cross-functional projects, gaining buy-in from diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated strong commercial acumen beyond just procurement, understanding broader business drivers.
- 2
From Senior Manager in a Large Organisation
5-8 years at Senior Manager level in a large corporateSkills to master
- You'll bring deep experience in complex procurement environments. The key here is adapting to our specific culture and ways of working, quickly building internal credibility, and proving you can lead a team effectively in our context.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a significant spend portfolio (e.g., £50M+) and a team of at least 2-3 direct reports.
- Proven ability to navigate complex organisational structures and political landscapes.
- Strong track record of delivering measurable savings and value in previous roles.
- Quickly built rapport and trust with key internal stakeholders during the interview process.
- 3
From Consulting (Procurement Specialisation)
8-10 years in procurement consulting, with 3-5 years at Senior Manager/Principal levelSkills to master
- Consultants often bring fantastic strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. The transition involves moving from advising to owning the execution and dealing with the day-to-day realities of internal politics and messy data. You'll need to demonstrate genuine leadership and team development skills.
You're ready to move on when
- Led multiple procurement transformation projects, ideally with hands-on implementation experience.
- Can articulate how theoretical frameworks apply to real-world, messy scenarios.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence without formal authority.
- Evidence of coaching and developing junior consultants or client teams.
