The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Field Operations Specialist (L2)
2-3 years as a SpecialistSkills to master
- You'd need to have consistently hit your individual targets, shown initiative in problem-solving, and informally guided newer team members. Mastering our scheduling software and handling routine escalations independently would be crucial.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding individual performance metrics (e.g., schedule adherence, data accuracy).
- Volunteering to take on more complex or challenging tasks.
- Being the 'go-to' person for junior team members' questions.
- Proactively identifying and suggesting improvements to daily processes.
- 2
From Experienced Field Technician (L2/L3 equivalent)
5+ years as a technician, with some lead experienceSkills to master
- You'd need to demonstrate strong organisational skills, an understanding of service logistics beyond your own jobs, and a willingness to step away from hands-on repairs to manage people and processes. Your technical expertise would be invaluable, but the focus shifts.
You're ready to move on when
- Taking on informal leadership roles on complex jobs or projects.
- Mentoring apprentices or less experienced technicians effectively.
- Showing a keen interest in the 'why' behind scheduling and dispatch decisions.
- Excellent communication skills, both with customers and back-office teams.
- 3
From Dispatcher / Service Coordinator (L2 equivalent)
3-4 years in a dispatch roleSkills to master
- You'd need to broaden your understanding from purely reactive dispatch to proactive scheduling and team management. Developing strong problem-solving skills for field-specific issues and gaining a deeper understanding of technician challenges would be key.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently managing a complex dispatch board efficiently.
- Successfully handling customer escalations and re-routing requests.
- Proactively identifying potential schedule conflicts and resolving them.
- Demonstrating strong relationships with field technicians and understanding their daily challenges.
