This unit equips learners to safely access overhead line equipment construction sites by complying with health and safety regulations and understanding site briefing requirements. You'll follow procedures to identify hazards and ensure safe working practices on site.

What you'll be able to do

  • Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations, directives and guidelines.
  • Identify the requirements for site briefings to include safety arrangements, nature of work, hazards associated with the site, extent of safe working limits, emergency arrangements, welfare arrangements, PPE requirements, whom they will need to report to while on site and limits of personal responsibility.

What you'll be able to do

  • Work safely at all times, complying with your organisation's procedures, following the health and safety legislation, regulations and safe working practices and procedures, as applicable to the work location and activities
  • Identify and analyse any necessary changes to safety requirements on arriving at site, including prompt reporting to the relevant person(s) related to access to site locations
  • Identify the area of work and the components/equipment which is to be adjusted and adjust signalling equipment
  • Source and interpret the appropriate documentation and operating specifications for the equipment being adjusted to ensure that the adjustment complies with requirements
  • Identify and correctly use the relevant tools, test equipment and measuring instruments as applicable to the equipment being maintained
  • Carry out adjustments as applicable to the equipment being maintained and within the limits of own authority

What you'll be able to do

  • Identify and analyse any necessary changes to safety requirements on arriving at site, including prompt reporting to the relevant person(s) related to access to two of the following types of site locations: trackside, internal (such as telecoms box, equipment room), areas to which the public have access, confined spaces, elevated structures

  • Identify and correctly use the relevant tools, test equipment and measuring instruments as applicable to the equipment being maintained: power tools, hand tools, torque wrenches, wire and cable strippers, IDC tools (such as punch down tool), crimping tools, multi-meters, adjustment equipment, measuring equipment, alignment equipment, test equipment, other specific telecoms maintenance tools/equipment

You'll apply health and safety practices, follow maintenance schedules, interpret technical documentation, and confirm repair requirements to carry out fault diagnosis.

What you'll be able to do

  • Confirm and agree what repairs or modifications are to be carried out to meet the specification
  • Obtain and use the correct issue of company and/or manufacturers' drawings and planning documentation during circuit modification and rewiring activities
  • Adhere to procedures or systems in place for risk assessment, COSHH, personal protective equipment and other relevant safety regulations and procedures to realise a safe system of work during circuit modification and rewiring activities
  • Ensure the safe isolation of equipment (such as electricity, mechanical, air or fluids) during circuit modification and rewiring activities
  • Provide and maintain safe access and working arrangements for the repair or modification area during circuit modification and rewiring activities
  • Repair or modify electrical circuits using approved techniques and procedures during circuit modification and rewiring activities
  • Apply safe working practices and procedures at all times during circuit modification and rewiring activities
  • Dispose of waste items in a safe and environmentally acceptable manner, and leave the work area in a safe condition during circuit modification and rewiring activities
  • Prepare the electrical circuit for the required repair or modification

  • Complete the repair or modification within the agreed timescale

  • Produce accurate and complete records of all work carried out
  • Produce repaired or modified electrical circuits in accordance with one of the following: organisational guidelines and codes of practice, equipment manufacturers' documents, engineering change documents, BS, ISO and/or BSEN standards, company standard operating procedures (SOP’s), documents such as technical procedures, vehicle maintenance instructions, vehicle overhaul instructions, workshop overhaul standards specifications
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within your control and report those that cannot be solved
  • Complete the relevant paperwork/records from one of the following, and pass it to the appropriate people: job cards, permits to work/formal risk assessment and/or sign on/off procedures, maintenance log or report, company-specific documentation
