The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Office Coordinator / Administrator
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- Mastering daily office operations, managing supplies, handling mail, basic vendor interaction, and providing excellent internal customer service. You'd be the go-to for all the small stuff.
You're ready to move on when
- You can run the office's daily tasks without constant supervision.
- You've taken on informal leadership for small initiatives (e.g., organising the office social committee).
- You're proactively identifying and solving minor office issues, not just reacting to them.
- 2
Facilities Assistant / Support Role
2-4 yearsSkills to master
- Getting really good at managing service tickets, coordinating contractors for minor repairs, conducting site inspections, and understanding basic health and safety protocols. It's more hands-on with the building itself.
You're ready to move on when
- You're comfortable with our IWMS/CAFM system and can pull basic reports.
- You've successfully managed a small, defined project (like a minor office refresh).
- You're seen as reliable for ensuring contractor compliance and quality of work.
- 3
Hospitality or Events Coordinator (Corporate)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Developing exceptional customer service skills, managing complex logistics for events, coordinating catering and AV, and handling diverse stakeholder needs. You'd bring a strong service-first mentality.
You're ready to move on when
- You've managed events from planning to execution with minimal issues.
- You're brilliant at anticipating needs and solving problems on the fly.
- You have a natural knack for making people feel welcome and supported.
