The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Digital Marketing Specialist (L3)
3-5 years as an L3Skills to master
- Moving from individual campaign ownership to leading multi-channel programmes, providing informal mentorship, and taking on more strategic planning responsibilities. You'd need to show you can think beyond your own channel.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led complex, multi-channel campaigns from strategy to execution with minimal supervision.
- Consistently exceeded individual KPIs and contributed to broader team goals.
- Actively mentored junior team members and helped them develop their skills.
- Demonstrated strong cross-functional collaboration and influence with peers and senior stakeholders.
- 2
From Lead Digital Marketing Strategist (L4)
2-4 years as an L4Skills to master
- This is a very natural step. You'd need to transition from managing projects and influencing without direct reports to actually leading, hiring, and developing a team. Budget ownership and P&L accountability become much more significant here.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully designed and owned the digital strategy for a significant product or business unit.
- Managed project teams effectively, delivering complex programmes on time and within budget.
- Influenced senior stakeholders and contributed to strategic decision-making.
- Demonstrated an aptitude for people leadership, even without direct reports (e.g., leading working groups).
- 3
From Digital Marketing Manager (External)
Varies, but typically 5+ years in a similar management roleSkills to master
- Adapting to our company culture, specific market, and existing tech stack. You'd need to quickly build credibility with your new team and senior leadership, demonstrating your ability to drive results in a new environment.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven track record of success in a comparable management role in a similar industry.
- Strong references highlighting leadership, strategic thinking, and team development abilities.
- Ability to articulate how your experience translates directly to our business challenges and opportunities.
