The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Email Marketing Specialist (L2) to Senior Email Marketing Specialist (L3)
2-3 years as a SpecialistSkills to master
- Moving from executing standard campaigns to owning complex workstreams, leading A/B testing programmes, and demonstrating strong analytical skills to derive actionable insights. You'd also start informally mentoring junior colleagues.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeds performance targets for owned campaigns.
- Proactively identifies and solves complex problems without significant supervision.
- Successfully designs and implements advanced segmentation and automation workflows.
- Receives positive feedback on informal mentorship or peer support.
- Actively contributes strategic ideas in team meetings.
- 2
Marketing Coordinator (with Email Focus) to Senior Email Marketing Specialist (L3)
3-5 years as a Coordinator/ExecutiveSkills to master
- Deepening your technical expertise in email platforms, mastering advanced segmentation and automation, and taking full ownership of end-to-end campaign management. You'd need to demonstrate a strong analytical mindset and a solid understanding of deliverability.
You're ready to move on when
- Has successfully managed a significant portion of email campaigns independently.
- Has taken initiative to learn and implement advanced email marketing techniques.
- Can articulate the 'why' behind campaign performance and propose data-driven optimisations.
- Has a strong portfolio of email campaigns they've personally managed and improved.
