You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a major legal department initiative (e.g., global compliance programme, M&A integration).
- Consistently provided strategic advice to the executive team that directly influenced business outcomes.
- Managed a large team of senior legal professionals, demonstrating strong leadership and talent development.
- Proven ability to operate independently and make high-stakes decisions with limited oversight.

Partner at a Top-Tier Law Firm (leading a relevant practice)
5-10 years as a PartnerSkills to master
- Deep subject matter expertise in corporate law, M&A, litigation, or regulatory affairs, managing significant client relationships, business development, and leading large legal teams on complex matters. You'd need to demonstrate a strong commercial acumen beyond pure legal advice.
You're ready to move on when
- Served as lead counsel on numerous high-profile, complex transactions or litigations for major corporate clients.
- Developed and maintained a substantial book of business, demonstrating commercial and client management skills.
- Consistently advised C-suite executives and Boards of major corporations on strategic legal issues.
- Proven ability to manage large teams and projects under intense pressure, delivering exceptional client service.

General Counsel (GC) at a smaller/mid-sized company
5-8 years as GCSkills to master
- Full P&L responsibility for a legal department, direct advisory to a CEO and Board, managing all legal functions (often with fewer resources), and navigating the full spectrum of legal challenges for a growing business. This path builds breadth.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully scaled a legal function to support significant company growth (e.g., IPO, major funding rounds).
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead an entire legal department from scratch or through significant transformation.
- Provided comprehensive legal advice across all functional areas of a business.
- Proven track record of managing external counsel and optimising legal spend effectively.
