3What this role really is

A Finance Systems Analyst supports and maintains finance systems, helping to fix problems and keep financial data accurate.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

SAP S/4HANA or Oracle NetSuite (ERP) Intermediate

User-level proficiency for data extraction, transaction lookup, master data maintenance, and running standard reports. You'll be navigating the system daily.

Anaplan or Workday Adaptive Planning (EPM) Basic

Inputting data into existing models and running pre-built reports. You'll help users with basic navigation and data entry issues.

Microsoft Excel Intermediate

Filtering, sorting, basic formulas (SUM, AVERAGE, VLOOKUP, IF), and simple data manipulation for ad-hoc analysis and report validation.

Power BI or Tableau (Dashboard Consumption) Intermediate

Consuming, filtering, and understanding existing dashboards. You'll help users navigate dashboards and understand the data presented.

UiPath or Automation Anywhere (RPA Monitoring) Basic

Monitoring existing RPA bots, checking their status, and documenting any exceptions or failures for escalation. You won't be building them, but you'll keep an eye on them.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
System Configuration Changes No authority. Escalate all requests to Digital Finance Analyst or IT. Propose minor configuration changes for review by Senior Digital Finance Partner. Make technical configuration decisions within defined project scope, with sign-off from Lead Finance Transformation Architect.
Master Data Setup Execute setup following documented procedures. Any deviations or complex requests must be approved by Digital Finance Analyst. Independently set up complex master data, identifying and resolving minor inconsistencies. Consult on new data fields. Design and implement new master data structures. Own the data governance for specific financial entities.
User Support & Troubleshooting Resolve L1 issues (e.g., password resets, basic report errors) using documented solutions. Escalate anything beyond standard fixes. Troubleshoot and resolve L2 issues, often requiring deeper system knowledge. Propose workarounds for known bugs. Lead complex troubleshooting efforts, coordinating with IT and vendors. Define new support processes and knowledge base articles.
Process Improvement Suggestions Identify potential areas for improvement and raise them with your Digital Finance Analyst. Propose specific, actionable improvements for existing processes, including simple automation ideas. Design and lead the implementation of significant process improvements, including automation initiatives.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Ticket Resolution Time (L1 Support)
How quickly you resolve basic system support tickets raised by finance users.
Target · Average 4-hour resolution for 80% of L1 tickets

If a user can't log into Anaplan, you get them back online within 2 hours. Or, if a report isn't running, you figure out the basic fix or escalate it properly within 4 hours.

Master Data Accuracy Rate
The percentage of master data entries (e.g., new vendors, cost centres) you're responsible for that are correctly set up first time.
Target · 98% accuracy

You're asked to set up 50 new cost centres in SAP. Only one has an incorrect hierarchy code after review, meaning a 98% accuracy rate.

Adherence to Documentation Standards
How well you follow and update our internal system documentation and user guides.
Target · 100% compliance for assigned tasks

You've documented the steps for a common user query, and it's clear, accurate, and follows our template. No one has to ask you for clarification because the guide is spot on.

Successful Report Generation (Scheduled)
The number of scheduled reports you're responsible for pulling that are delivered on time and without errors.
Target · 99% on-time and error-free

You're responsible for pulling the weekly AP ageing report from SAP. You deliver it to the team inbox by 9 AM every Monday, and the numbers always tie back to the system.

User Satisfaction with Support
How happy finance users are with the help you provide for their system issues.
  • Positive feedback in team meetings, users directly thanking you for quick help, fewer repeat issues for the same problem, your Digital Finance Analyst noting fewer escalations from you.
Proactive Learning & System Knowledge
How quickly you pick up new system functionalities and show initiative in learning our finance tech stack.
  • Asking insightful questions about system logic, independently researching solutions before asking for help, suggesting minor process improvements, being able to explain basic system flows to new joiners.
Collaboration with Senior Analysts
How effectively you work with more experienced team members, especially when escalating issues or asking for guidance.
  • Providing clear, concise summaries when escalating, preparing all necessary information before asking for help, actively participating in team discussions, offering to help senior colleagues with data tasks.
Contribution to Team Knowledge Base
How much you add to our shared understanding of system quirks, common fixes, and best practices.
  • Creating new entries for common FAQs, updating existing documentation with clearer steps, sharing 'lessons learned' from a tricky issue with the team, identifying gaps in our current guides.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Solving Puzzles

Every system error or data discrepancy is a puzzle to solve. You'll enjoy digging through logs, checking configurations, and tracing data flows to find the missing piece or the incorrect setting.

A user can't run a specific report. You methodically check their permissions, the report parameters, and the underlying data source until you find the small filter they forgot to apply.

Making Things Work

You get a real buzz from fixing something that was broken or making a manual process a little bit smoother. Seeing a finance user get their report or complete their task because of your help is genuinely satisfying.

You help the AP team troubleshoot why invoices aren't flowing into the system, and once it's fixed, you see their backlog clear quickly. That's a good day.

Learning New Tech

You're excited by the idea of understanding how different finance software works. You'll enjoy getting hands-on with ERPs, reporting tools, and even basic automation, always keen to learn more about their capabilities.

You're given access to a new reporting tool and immediately start exploring its features, trying to understand how it connects to our existing data, even before formal training.

What frustrates people
  • Dealing with users who haven't read the manual or tried basic troubleshooting.
  • Repetitive tasks that feel like 'busy work' but are essential for data quality.
  • Legacy systems that are clunky and slow, making simple fixes take ages.
  • Having to escalate issues to IT or senior analysts and waiting for their response, which can feel like you're stuck.
What this role does not give you
  • High-level strategic decision-making (not yet, anyway).
  • Direct management of a team (you'll be an individual contributor).
  • Immediate impact on major business outcomes (your impact is more foundational).
  • A quiet, uninterrupted work environment (expect regular pings and calls).

8Who you work with

This role directly impacts the efficiency and accuracy of our entire finance operation. If our systems aren't working, or the data's wrong, it slows down everything from paying suppliers to reporting our quarterly results. Your work ensures the finance team has reliable tools and data, which means they can make better decisions, faster. It's about keeping the financial wheels turning, really.

Inside the business
  • Accounts Payable Team
  • Financial Reporting Team
  • FP&A Analysts
  • IT Service Desk
Outside the business
  • Software Support Teams (e.g., SAP, Anaplan)
  • External auditors (occasionally, for data requests)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • A genuine interest in how technology supports finance operations.
  • Some experience (even academic or internship) with an ERP system or similar business software.
  • Strong logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and verbally.
  • A degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Basic SQL for Data Extraction

Being able to write simple SQL queries will give you much more flexibility in pulling exactly the data you need from our data warehouses, rather than relying solely on pre-built reports. It's a foundational skill for any data-driven finance role.

SELECT statements · WHERE clauses · JOINs (basic) · Data Types

  • This month: Find some free online SQL tutorials (e.g., Codecademy, SQLZoo) and work through the basics.
  • Month 2: Ask your manager if you can get read-only access to a non-production finance database to practice simple queries.
  • Month 3: Try to write a simple SQL query to pull data for a report you currently generate manually in Excel.

Quick win: Start by just understanding what a basic SQL query looks like. Even recognising the syntax is a good first step.

Intermediate Excel Automation (Macros/VBA)

While we're moving towards more robust systems, Excel isn't going away. Being able to automate repetitive tasks within Excel using simple macros or VBA will save you (and others) a lot of time and reduce errors.

Recording Macros · Basic VBA Syntax · Error Handling (Basic) · User-Defined Functions

  • This month: Identify one repetitive Excel task you do regularly (e.g., formatting a report) and try to record a macro for it.
  • Month 2: Watch some YouTube tutorials on basic VBA and try to modify a recorded macro to make it more efficient.
  • Month 3: Build a simple VBA script that automates a data cleaning step for a report you work on.

Quick win: Learn how to record and run a simple macro to format a spreadsheet. It’s surprisingly easy and immediately useful.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Enrolling in online courses or tutorials for SQL basics, Excel advanced functions, or an introduction to Python for data analysis.
  • Attending webinars or industry events focused on finance technology or ERP systems (many are free!).
  • Seeking out mentorship from a senior analyst or a finance professional with strong system knowledge.
  • Actively participating in internal training sessions on our finance systems and new software rollouts.
  • Reading industry blogs or publications to stay updated on trends in digital finance.

  • Clear Instructions
  • Context Provision
  • Iterative Prompting

  • Key Message Identification
  • Visual Clarity

16Pay and demand

Pay & demand

The figure is the median for full-time employees in the ONS occupation this job title codes to (Finance and investment analysts and advisers), from the April 2025 survey, about six months old when published, as ASHE always is. It is that occupation's middle, not this role's. Half earn more.

The ten Future Fluencies

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Finance Systems Analyst is actually changing.
