The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Commercial Finance Analyst (Internal Promotion)
3-5 years as an AnalystSkills to master
- Independently owning a segment of the forecast, performing complex variance analysis, leading initial Deal Desk reviews, and informally mentoring new joiners. You'll need to show you can take initiative and deliver reliably.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently hitting forecast accuracy targets for your assigned segment.
- Proactively identifying and solving commercial finance problems without constant supervision.
- Positive feedback from sales stakeholders on your partnership and insights.
- Demonstrating leadership potential by guiding junior team members or leading small projects.
- 2
FP&A Analyst (External Hire)
4-7 years in FP&ASkills to master
- While you'll have strong core FP&A skills, you'll need to quickly get up to speed on commercial-specific metrics (CAC, LTV), pricing strategies, and the nuances of sales compensation. You'll also need to develop your stakeholder management skills with sales teams.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven ability to build and manage complex financial models.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on business outcomes.
- Experience presenting financial insights to non-finance audiences.
- A genuine interest in commercial strategy and how finance can drive sales performance.
- 3
Management Accountant (External Hire)
5-8 years as a Management AccountantSkills to master
- You'll bring strong cost accounting and reporting skills, but you'll need to pivot to a more forward-looking, commercial perspective. This means understanding sales drivers, deal structures, and how to influence revenue generation, not just track costs. You'll also need to build your influencing skills with sales.
You're ready to move on when
- Solid experience in budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Ability to translate complex financial data into clear business insights.
- A proactive approach to identifying opportunities for margin improvement.
- Enthusiasm for partnering directly with operational or commercial teams.
