The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Compliance & Safety Specialist (L2)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- You'd need to have truly owned site-level compliance processes, led minor incident investigations independently, and become proficient in using our EHS/GRC platforms. Being able to deliver basic compliance training is also key.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently closing CAPAs on time and effectively.
- Successfully managing site-level audit preparation and follow-up.
- Proactively identifying and addressing local compliance risks.
- Receiving positive feedback from site managers on your support and advice.
- 2
EHS Engineer/Manager (Site Level)
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- You'd have managed all EHS aspects for a specific manufacturing plant or operational site, including permit management, incident response, and safety programme implementation. This gives you a really strong operational grounding.
You're ready to move on when
- Achieving sustained reductions in site incident rates.
- Successfully managing complex environmental permits and reporting.
- Building strong relationships with operational leadership.
- Demonstrating strong technical knowledge of process safety and risk management.
- 3
Quality Assurance Lead
5-7 yearsSkills to master
- You'd have deep experience in quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001), leading quality audits, managing non-conformances, and driving continuous improvement initiatives within a product or service context. Your focus would shift more to broader compliance.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully implementing quality improvement projects.
- Leading external quality audits with positive outcomes.
- Strong command of root cause analysis for quality issues.
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams on quality standards.
