The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From ESG Specialist (Level 2)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Moving from owning specific processes to leading full projects, developing stronger stakeholder influencing skills, and beginning to mentor junior colleagues. You'll need to demonstrate a broader understanding of ESG strategy.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed at least one full ESG reporting cycle independently.
- Consistently delivered high-quality data and analysis with minimal supervision.
- Proactively identified and proposed solutions to ESG challenges, not just executed tasks.
- Received positive feedback from colleagues on informal mentorship or collaboration.
- 2
From Sustainability Consultant
5-7 yearsSkills to master
- Adapting from client-facing project work to internal corporate dynamics. This means building internal credibility, navigating organisational politics, and understanding how to implement change within a single company's specific context. You'll need to get your hands dirty with internal processes.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing multiple consulting projects simultaneously, delivering to budget and timeline.
- Demonstrable ability to translate external best practices into actionable, company-specific recommendations.
- Strong client management skills, adaptable to internal stakeholder engagement.
- A clear understanding of the difference between advising on strategy and implementing it internally.
- 3
From Related Corporate Role (e.g., Compliance, Risk, Corporate Affairs)
6-8 yearsSkills to master
- Deepening your specific ESG technical knowledge (e.g., GHG accounting, materiality assessment methodologies), understanding the 'alphabet soup' of frameworks, and developing a holistic view of sustainability beyond your previous specialism. You'll need to show a genuine passion for ESG.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven track record in a highly regulated or complex corporate environment.
- Demonstrable project management experience within a corporate setting.
- Completed relevant ESG certifications or extensive self-study in sustainability topics.
- Can articulate how your previous experience directly translates to ESG challenges and solutions.
