The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Lead/Principal Sustainability Specialist
3-5 years at Lead/Principal levelSkills to master
- Moving from architecting a domain to leading a full function. This means developing strong people management skills, budget ownership, and cross-functional influencing at a Director/VP level. You'll need to demonstrate strategic thinking beyond your specific technical area.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led multiple complex, cross-functional sustainability projects end-to-end.
- Consistently mentored 2-3 junior team members, with demonstrable impact on their growth.
- Proactively identified and proposed new strategic sustainability initiatives that were adopted.
- Demonstrated ability to present complex topics to senior leadership with clarity and confidence.
- 2
From Sustainability Consultancy (Senior Manager/Principal)
5-7 years in consultancy, with 2-3 years at senior manager levelSkills to master
- Transitioning from advising multiple clients to owning the strategy and execution for a single organisation. This means building deep internal relationships, navigating corporate politics, and managing an internal team rather than project-based consultants. You'll need to prove you can 'do' as well as 'advise'.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed large-scale sustainability transformation projects for clients, seeing them through to implementation.
- Developed and maintained strong client relationships, often at a senior executive level.
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead project teams, managing budgets and deliverables.
- A clear understanding of the difference between a consultancy role and an in-house leadership position.
- 3
From a related Corporate Function (e.g., Head of ESG Reporting, Head of Responsible Sourcing)
3-5 years leading a specific, related functionSkills to master
- Broadening your expertise from a specialist area (e.g., just reporting or just supply chain) to cover the full spectrum of environmental, social, and governance issues. This requires rapidly acquiring knowledge in new domains and demonstrating the ability to integrate diverse sustainability topics into a cohesive strategy.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a critical ESG-related function within a large organisation.
- Developed strong relationships with senior leaders outside of your immediate functional area.
- Demonstrated a proactive interest in broader sustainability topics beyond your specialism.
- Proven ability to manage a team and deliver against ambitious targets.
