3What this role really is

A Customer Acquisition Specialist finds and contacts potential new customers to start conversations that can lead to sales. The work means working out who to approach, understanding what they need, and getting them interested enough to talk further. It sits at the start of the sales pipeline, passing qualified leads on to Account Executives who take the deals forward.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

Salesforce (CRM) Intermediate

Accurately logging all your activities (calls, emails, meetings), managing lead, contact, and opportunity records, and building basic reports to track your personal pipeline. You'll use it constantly, so you need to be comfortable.

Outreach / Salesloft (Sales Engagement) Intermediate

Executing pre-built outreach sequences, personalising templates for individual prospects, managing your daily tasks, and maybe even running small A/B tests on subject lines or call scripts to see what works best.

LinkedIn Sales Navigator (Prospecting) Intermediate

Building targeted lead lists using various filters, saving accounts to track their activity, and using InMail for initial outreach to key decision-makers. It's your go-to for finding the right people.

ZoomInfo / Cognism (Data Enrichment) Intermediate

Finding and verifying contact information (direct dials, emails), enriching existing CRM records, and building prospect lists based on company size, industry, or technology they use. Essential for getting accurate contact details.

Gong / Chorus.ai (Conversation Intelligence) Basic

Reviewing your own call recordings for self-coaching, using trackers to monitor keyword usage, and sharing call snippets with your manager for feedback. You'll use it to get better, faster.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Daily Outreach Strategy Follows pre-defined sequences and scripts. Consults manager for any deviation. Chooses appropriate sequences and messaging based on prospect research and persona. Adapts templates independently. Escalates if a sequence isn't performing. Designs new outreach sequences and tests messaging strategies. Coaches others on optimal outreach.
Lead Qualification (MQL to SQL) Qualifies leads strictly based on checklist; manager reviews all SQLs. Independently qualifies leads using BANT/MEDDICC frameworks. Escalates borderline cases or complex scenarios to manager for review. Defines and refines qualification criteria. Makes judgment calls on complex leads. Trains junior team on qualification.
CRM Data Entry & Hygiene Logs activities and updates records with daily manager oversight. Takes ownership of personal CRM data accuracy. Proactively identifies and corrects minor discrepancies. Reports systemic issues to Sales Ops. Audits team CRM data. Proposes improvements to CRM processes and workflows.
Objection Handling Uses provided scripts for common objections. Escalates complex objections to manager. Independently handles most common objections, adapting responses based on context. Seeks coaching for new or challenging objections. Develops new objection handling strategies. Creates and shares best practices with the team. Coaches others.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Sales Qualified Leads (SQLs) Generated
The number of prospects you've qualified and successfully handed over to an Account Executive.
Target · 10-15 SQLs per month, consistently

If you hand over 12 SQLs in a month, and 9 of those meet our qualification criteria after AE review, you're hitting your target. We're looking for quality, not just quantity here.

Pipeline Contribution Value
The total estimated value of the opportunities you've added to the sales pipeline.
Target · £100K - £150K in new pipeline value per month

You qualify 10 leads, each with an average deal size of £12K. That's £120K in pipeline contribution for the month. This shows you're targeting the right size of customer for us.

Conversion Rate (MQL to SQL)
The percentage of marketing-generated leads (MQLs) that you successfully convert into Sales Qualified Leads (SQLs).
Target · 25-30% conversion rate

If Marketing gives you 50 MQLs, and you turn 15 of those into SQLs, that's a 30% conversion rate. It tells us you're good at spotting the real potential in the leads you get.

Outreach Activity Volume
The total number of calls, emails, and social touches you make each day/week.
Target · 100+ daily outreach activities (mix of calls, emails, LinkedIn)

You log 50 calls, 40 emails, and 15 LinkedIn messages in Salesforce by end of day. This shows you're putting in the effort to reach enough people.

Quality of Discovery Calls
How well you uncover prospect pain, quantify impact, and align our solution during initial conversations.
  • Your manager will listen to call recordings (Gong/Chorus) and provide feedback. We'll look for clear articulation of prospect challenges, evidence of deep questioning, and a natural flow to the conversation, not just a script read-out. Account Executives will also give feedback on the quality of the leads you pass them, specifically if the prospect's needs were well-understood.
CRM Data Hygiene & Accuracy
The completeness and accuracy of your records in Salesforce – logging activities, updating lead statuses, and adding relevant notes.
  • Regular audits by your manager or Sales Operations will check for missing notes, incorrect statuses, or incomplete contact details. The expectation is that an AE can pick up any of your leads and immediately understand the full history without needing to ask you. It's about being disciplined with your admin.
Proactive Problem Solving
Your ability to identify issues in the sales process or with a prospect and propose solutions, rather than just escalating problems.
  • During weekly check-ins, you'll bring not just problems, but also potential ways to fix them. For example, if a certain outreach sequence isn't working, you'll suggest changes to the messaging or target persona, rather than just saying 'it's not working'.
Team Collaboration & Support
How well you work with Account Executives and contribute to a positive team environment, including informally guiding new joiners.
  • Feedback from AEs on how easy it is to work with you and the quality of the handovers. Your willingness to share best practices, help unstick a colleague, or offer advice to a new starter is also a key indicator. We're a team, after all.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Direct Impact & Tangible Results

You'll love seeing your efforts directly translate into new meetings booked, new opportunities created, and ultimately, new customers. Every qualified lead you pass is a win you can point to.

Booking a meeting with a major company that you've been chasing for weeks, knowing that's a potential £50K deal for the business.

Continuous Learning & Skill Development

You'll be constantly refining your communication, objection handling, and research skills. Every call is a chance to learn something new about a market or a prospect.

After a tough call, you'll review the recording with your manager, get specific feedback, and immediately try out a new technique on the next call.

Competitive Environment & Recognition

You'll thrive in a team where everyone is pushing to hit their targets and celebrating each other's successes. There are leaderboards, incentives, and plenty of high-fives.

Hitting the top of the team leaderboard for SQLs generated in a month and getting a shout-out in the weekly sales meeting.

What frustrates people
  • Getting a 'hot' lead from Marketing that turns out to be completely unqualified – total waste of time.
  • Spending ages researching a prospect, only for them to never reply to any of your outreach.
  • Having a promising conversation, only for the prospect to 'go dark' just before you can book the meeting.
  • The CRM being a bit clunky or having to manually enter a lot of data that feels repetitive.
  • Your carefully crafted email sequence not getting the response you expected, and having to go back to the drawing board.
What this role does not give you
  • A quiet, predictable 9-5 job with no pressure.
  • A role where you're solely focused on closing big deals (that comes later).
  • A job where every single piece of your work leads to an immediate, positive outcome.
  • A role with minimal administrative tasks or data entry.
  • A completely independent role with no team collaboration or coaching.

8Who you work with

This role directly impacts the health and volume of our new business sales pipeline. Your ability to consistently generate high-quality Sales Qualified Leads (SQLs) is crucial for hitting our overall revenue targets. Without a strong pipeline, the entire sales organisation struggles to grow. You're essentially the gatekeeper, ensuring only genuinely promising opportunities make it through to the next stage, saving valuable time for our closing teams.

Inside the business
  • Account Executives (who you pass leads to)
  • Sales Operations (for CRM support and process help)
  • Marketing Team (to understand campaigns and lead quality)
  • Your Manager (for coaching and weekly check-ins)
Outside the business
  • Prospective Customers (your primary focus)
  • Industry Contacts (for networking and insights)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • At least 2 years of experience in a customer-facing role, ideally in sales, lead generation, or account management.
  • Proven ability to hit targets in a previous role, whatever those targets might have been.
  • Experience using a CRM system (Salesforce, HubSpot, etc.) to log activities and manage customer data.
  • A track record of clear and confident communication, both written and verbal.
  • A genuine interest in technology or our specific industry, and a desire to learn more about it.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced Sales Engagement Platform Optimisation (Outreach/Salesloft)

Important within 12 months – you'll move beyond just executing sequences. You'll be analysing their performance, making data-driven tweaks, and even suggesting new sequence designs based on what you're seeing in the market.

A/B Testing Methodologies · Sequence Branching & Personalisation at Scale · Performance Reporting & Analysis · Ethical Outreach & Compliance

  • This week: Dive into the analytics section of Outreach/Salesloft. What are your best-performing emails?
  • This month: Propose one small A/B test for a subject line or call-to-action in one of your sequences.
  • Month 2: Work with your manager to design a new, more personalised sequence for a specific target account list.
  • Month 3: Present your findings from your A/B tests to the team during a weekly meeting.

Quick win: Identify your lowest-performing email step in a sequence and try rewriting it using AI for a fresh perspective. It's a quick way to see if you can boost engagement.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Attend industry webinars and virtual events focused on sales development and prospecting techniques.
  • Read sales books and listen to podcasts from recognised sales leaders to continuously refine your approach.
  • Participate in internal training sessions on product updates, new sales plays, and objection handling.
  • Seek out a mentor within the sales team (or even outside) to guide your career growth and share experiences.
  • Regularly review your own call recordings (using Gong/Chorus) for self-coaching and identify areas for improvement.

The ten Future Fluencies

Zavmo analysis

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. They're the capabilities employers are now writing into senior roles faster than people are learning them. Zavmo weaves them through whatever you study, so you come out with both: the credential and the fluency.

The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Customer Acquisition Specialist is actually changing.

Working with AI on the job

Working with AI

Where AI is starting to help

Let's be real, a lot of what you do as a Customer Acquisition Specialist can be repetitive. Imagine getting back a quarter of your week to focus on what truly matters: building relationships and closing more deals. That's exactly what AI can do for you.

We're not talking about robots taking over your job; we're talking about smart tools that take the grunt work off your plate. Think of AI as your super-efficient personal assistant, helping you be more productive, more accurate, and frankly, a lot less stressed. You'll be able to hit your targets faster and with less effort, giving you more time to actually sell.

AI-Powered Outreach Personalisation

Use AI tools like Lavender or Regie.ai to quickly scan a prospect's LinkedIn, company news, and recent activities. The AI then suggests hyper-personalised opening lines and value propositions for your emails, moving way beyond generic templates. This means more replies and fewer 'delete' clicks.

Conversation Intelligence Analysis

Leverage AI in Gong or Chorus.ai to automatically transcribe your calls. The AI can then identify key moments where top performers successfully handle objections, or when competitors are mentioned. You'll build a searchable library of best practices, meaning you learn faster without hours of manual review.

Pre-Call Research Synthesis

Before a big call, use an AI assistant to quickly digest a target company's latest news, earnings reports, or press releases. It'll generate a concise 'briefing doc' with key challenges, strategic initiatives, and potential talking points. No more sifting through dozens of articles; get straight to what matters.

Automated Call Summaries & CRM Entry

Imagine finishing a call and having an AI tool automatically generate a concise summary, identify action items, and even draft an activity log directly into Salesforce. This cuts down on manual note-taking and ensures your CRM is always perfectly up-to-date, saving you precious minutes after every conversation.
