The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Manager, External Technology & Partnerships (L5)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Transition from managing a team and a business unit's strategy to defining the multi-year, enterprise-wide open innovation strategy. This means expanding your influence across all R&D functions and engaging directly with the C-suite and Board. You'll need to master organisational design and significantly larger P&L management.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led a major external technology integration that resulted in a new product line or significant cost savings.
- Developed and mentored multiple managers on your team, demonstrating strong succession planning.
- Consistently exceeded strategic impact metrics for your business unit's external innovation efforts.
- Proven ability to influence senior leaders outside your direct reporting line on strategic technology decisions.
- 2
From Head of R&D / CTO (Startup or Mid-sized Company)
2-4 years (post-acquisition or transition)Skills to master
- Adapting your entrepreneurial drive and technical leadership to a larger, more complex corporate environment. This involves navigating internal politics, working with established corporate processes, and scaling your strategic vision across multiple business units. You'll need to master the art of influencing without direct authority in some contexts.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully scaled a technology from concept to market in a previous role.
- Demonstrated strong leadership and strategic acumen in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment.
- Proven ability to build and manage high-performing technical teams.
- A clear understanding of the broader innovation ecosystem and how to leverage it.
- 3
From Senior Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) / Venture Partner
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Shifting from an investment-focused mindset to an integration-focused one. While you'll still identify promising technologies, the emphasis will be on how to effectively bring them into our R&D organisation and derive strategic value, rather than purely financial returns. You'll need to deepen your understanding of internal R&D processes and corporate integration challenges.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully identified and championed multiple strategic investments that led to commercial success.
- Strong network within the startup and VC ecosystem.
- Proven ability to conduct rigorous technical and commercial due diligence.
- Demonstrated understanding of corporate strategic objectives and how external innovation can support them.
