The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Buyer / Procurement Specialist (Level 2)
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- Independently managing a portfolio of low-complexity suppliers, conducting RFQs, resolving invoice issues, and taking ownership of routine processes. You'd have nailed the transactional side and started to dabble in light sourcing.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently hitting targets for PO accuracy and on-time delivery for your managed suppliers.
- Proactively identifying issues and proposing solutions for routine procurement problems.
- Successfully managing a small portfolio of non-strategic suppliers without constant supervision.
- Providing informal guidance or support to new joiners on basic P2P processes.
- 2
Junior Category Specialist (from a larger organisation)
3-4 yearsSkills to master
- Supporting a Category Manager on larger sourcing projects, conducting market research, assisting with RFx documents, and helping to build basic TCO models. You'd have exposure to strategic sourcing, but not yet leading it.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully delivering research and analysis that directly informed a larger category strategy.
- Demonstrating a strong understanding of category-specific market dynamics.
- Consistently producing high-quality support for RFx processes, from drafting to analysis.
- Receiving positive feedback from your Category Manager on your analytical contributions.
- 3
Supply Chain Analyst (with a sourcing focus)
4-5 yearsSkills to master
- Deep data analysis skills, particularly around spend, inventory, and logistics. You'd be good at spotting trends, identifying cost reduction opportunities through data, and presenting insights. You'd need to pick up more on the commercial and negotiation side.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully identifying and quantifying significant cost-saving opportunities through data analysis.
- Building and maintaining complex dashboards or reports that provide actionable insights.
- Proactively presenting data-driven recommendations to commercial or procurement teams.
- A strong desire to move into a more commercially focused, supplier-facing role.
