How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Procurement Specialist / Buyer (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- Independently owning the full P2P process for a sub-category, running simple RFQs, managing routine supplier relationships, and demonstrating a solid understanding of contract basics.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering on smaller sourcing projects with minimal supervision.
- Proactively identifying process improvements and taking ownership of their implementation.
- Being the go-to person for complex transactional issues or routine supplier queries.
- Starting to informally mentor new joiners or less experienced colleagues.

From an Analytical Role (e.g., Financial Analyst, Data Analyst)
3-5 years in an analytical role, plus 1-2 years in a junior procurement role.Skills to master
- Translating complex data into actionable commercial insights, building robust financial models, and then learning the specific procurement methodologies (like the 7-step sourcing process) and stakeholder management skills.
You're ready to move on when
- A proven ability to analyse large datasets and identify commercial opportunities or risks.
- Strong communication skills, able to explain complex analytical findings to non-technical audiences.
- A demonstrated interest in commercial negotiations and supplier management (e.g., through project work or self-study).
- Having completed a CIPS Level 4 or similar introductory procurement qualification.

From a Business Unit Commercial Role
4-6 years in a commercial role (e.g., Sales Ops, Product Ops) plus 1-2 years in a junior procurement role.Skills to master
- Deep understanding of internal business needs and commercial drivers, then learning the procurement process, negotiation tactics, and supplier market dynamics.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven experience managing budgets and commercial relationships within a business unit.
- A strong track record of influencing internal stakeholders and driving commercial outcomes.
- A desire to move to the 'buy-side' and apply commercial acumen to external supplier relationships.
- Having completed a CIPS Level 4 or similar introductory procurement qualification.
