The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Associate Certification Project Manager (L2)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Independently managing single-site certification projects, taking ownership of specific workstreams (e.g., CAPA management for one site), identifying process gaps, and proposing solutions. You'd also be getting comfortable with our EHS/QMS platforms.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 single-site ISO certification projects from start to finish.
- Consistently closed out Minor NCs effectively and on time.
- Demonstrated strong understanding of core ISO standards and our internal QHS processes.
- Proactively identified and resolved issues within your projects, escalating only truly novel problems.
- 2
Quality/H&S Specialist (from another company)
5-7 yearsSkills to master
- Adapting your existing QHS expertise to our specific industry and internal processes, quickly learning our EHS/QMS and project management tools, and building relationships with regional stakeholders. You'd need to show you can manage projects, not just advise on quality.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven experience leading certification efforts in a similar operational environment (e.g., manufacturing, logistics).
- Strong track record of managing projects and influencing teams without direct authority.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new systems and organisational cultures.
- Already hold a Lead Auditor certification for a relevant ISO standard.
- 3
Auditor (from a Certification Body)
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- Transitioning from an external audit perspective to an internal implementation and project management role. This means shifting from identifying non-conformances to *preventing* them and *building* the systems. You'd need to learn our internal politics and how to influence from within.
You're ready to move on when
- Extensive experience conducting external audits across various industries and standards.
- Strong understanding of audit methodologies and registrar expectations.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate findings clearly and constructively.
- A genuine desire to move into an internal, hands-on project management role rather than just auditing.
