The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Global Marketing Specialist (L3)
3-5 years in previous roleSkills to master
- You'd need to have consistently owned and successfully delivered multi-channel campaigns end-to-end, demonstrated strong analytical skills, and started informally mentoring junior colleagues. Proving you can influence beyond your direct team is crucial.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding campaign performance targets.
- Proactively identifying and proposing solutions to complex marketing challenges.
- Being the go-to person for specific campaign types or channel expertise.
- Receiving positive feedback on your ability to collaborate with Sales or Product.
- 2
Marketing Lead / Manager (from a smaller company or specific region)
4-6 years in previous roleSkills to master
- You'd need to adapt to the scale and complexity of a global organisation, learn our specific MarTech stack, and quickly build relationships across diverse teams. Proving you can operate without direct reports and lead through influence is key.
You're ready to move on when
- Demonstrated ability to build and scale marketing programmes from scratch.
- Experience managing budgets and proving ROI in previous roles.
- A clear understanding of how to translate business goals into marketing strategy.
- Strong examples of cross-functional project leadership.
- 3
Agency-Side Senior Strategist / Account Director
5-7 years in previous roleSkills to master
- You'd need to transition from client-facing strategy to internal ownership, focusing on long-term programme architecture rather than project-based campaigns. Understanding internal politics and gaining buy-in from diverse internal stakeholders will be a new challenge.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience developing comprehensive marketing strategies for large, complex clients.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deliver against client objectives.
- Strong presentation and client management skills (which translate well to internal stakeholders).
- A desire to 'own' the strategy and see it through, rather than hand it off.
