How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Progression from Brand Manager (Internal)
3-5 years as a Brand ManagerSkills to master
- Mastering full P&L ownership, leading complex multi-channel campaigns, demonstrating strong agency management, and beginning to mentor junior team members. You'll need to show you can handle the biggest brands or most challenging launches.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding brand P&L targets for your assigned brand.
- Successful delivery of at least 2-3 major integrated campaigns from brief to execution.
- Positive feedback from agencies and cross-functional partners on your leadership and collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and present strategic recommendations to senior management.

External Senior Brand Manager (from another company)
8-12 years total marketing experience, with 5+ years in brand management.Skills to master
- Bringing a proven track record of managing large, complex brands or categories, ideally within a similar industry. You'll need to quickly understand our company culture, internal processes, and specific market dynamics.
You're ready to move on when
- Portfolio of successful brand strategies and campaigns from previous roles.
- Strong references from former managers and direct reports.
- Ability to articulate strategic thinking and commercial results during interviews.
- A clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities in our specific market.

Marketing Consultant (transitioning in)
8-12 years in marketing consulting, with a focus on brand strategy or consumer goods.Skills to master
- Translating strategic recommendations into operational execution, adapting to an in-house, hands-on role, and building internal relationships. You'll need to prove you can get things done, not just advise.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience working directly with clients on brand strategy and campaign development.
- Ability to demonstrate impact and results from your consulting engagements.
- A desire to be deeply embedded in a brand's day-to-day operations.
- Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills.
