How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Trainee Solicitor Programme (followed by NQ role)
2-3 years (training contract) + 0-2 years PQESkills to master
- Foundational legal research, contract review basics, professional ethics, understanding of legal processes. You're learning the ropes.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering accurate legal research and summaries.
- Successfully managing small, discrete legal tasks with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrating a strong grasp of basic commercial contract principles.

Paralegal / Legal Assistant (followed by qualification)
3-5 years (paralegal) + 0-2 years PQESkills to master
- Practical legal administration, document management, supporting senior lawyers, gaining exposure to commercial matters. You've seen how things actually work.
You're ready to move on when
- Proactively identifying ways to improve legal processes.
- Taking initiative on complex administrative tasks without prompting.
- Successfully completing the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or equivalent.

Junior Corporate Counsel (from another in-house team)
2-3 years in a similar roleSkills to master
- Adapting to a new industry, understanding our specific business model, quickly integrating into our legal team's processes and culture.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully onboarding and taking ownership of routine matters within 3 months.
- Building strong relationships with key business stakeholders quickly.
- Demonstrating an understanding of our company's risk appetite and commercial objectives.
