The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Senior Payroll Specialist (L3)
3-5 years in previous roleSkills to master
- Mastering complex payroll scenarios (multi-state/country, garnishments), independently handling year-end processing, and demonstrating initial mentorship capabilities. You'd also be expected to have a solid grasp of GL reconciliation.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently resolving complex payroll issues without escalation.
- Proactively identifying and proposing process improvements.
- Successfully leading smaller, defined payroll projects or workstreams.
- Providing effective informal guidance and support to junior team members.
- 2
Payroll Analyst from a larger organisation
5-8 years in previous roleSkills to master
- Adapting to our specific systems and processes, quickly understanding our organisational structure, and demonstrating the ability to take full ownership of a payroll workstream. You'd need to show you can operate with less direct supervision.
You're ready to move on when
- Quickly getting up to speed on our HRIS (Workday) and ERP (NetSuite) configurations.
- Successfully navigating our internal stakeholder landscape (HR, Finance).
- Demonstrating a proactive approach to identifying and solving problems, rather than waiting for direction.
- Bringing fresh ideas and best practices from your previous experience.
