The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Compliance Administrator/Analyst
3-5 years as a SeniorSkills to master
- Mastering complex regulatory interpretation, leading small projects independently, and consistently mentoring junior colleagues. You'd also need to show initiative in identifying and proposing process improvements.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering high-quality, accurate compliance work without significant oversight.
- Proactively identifying and solving complex compliance problems.
- Being the 'go-to' person for specific regulatory areas within your team.
- Receiving positive feedback from colleagues you've informally mentored.
- Successfully leading at least two significant compliance workstreams or small projects.
- 2
From Internal Audit (Financial Services)
Roughly 5-7 years in auditSkills to master
- You'd need to shift from identifying issues to designing solutions. This means developing a deeper understanding of specific regulatory frameworks, gaining hands-on experience with GRC platforms, and learning how to influence business teams to adopt new controls.
You're ready to move on when
- Strong experience in control testing and identifying control weaknesses.
- Excellent understanding of risk management principles.
- A desire to move from 'third line' assurance to 'second line' design and implementation.
- Ability to translate audit findings into actionable compliance requirements.
- 3
From Regulatory Affairs/Legal Counsel (Junior)
4-6 years in regulatory affairs/junior legalSkills to master
- You'd need to bridge the gap from pure legal interpretation to practical operationalisation of regulations. This involves understanding how financial products work, the realities of business operations, and the practicalities of compliance monitoring and testing.
You're ready to move on when
- Strong ability to interpret legal and regulatory texts.
- A desire to apply legal knowledge in a more operational, hands-on compliance setting.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal audiences.
