The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Senior Financial Compliance Specialist (Internal)
Roughly 2-4 years as a Senior SpecialistSkills to master
- You'd need to have consistently demonstrated leadership on complex projects, successfully mentored junior colleagues, and shown an ability to challenge existing control designs and propose improvements. Basically, proving you can 'own' a significant chunk of our compliance programme.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 complex control design or remediation projects end-to-end.
- Consistently received positive feedback on your mentorship and guidance of junior team members.
- Proactively identified and mitigated new risks, showing strategic foresight.
- Acted as the primary point of contact for external auditors on several occasions.
- 2
From Senior Internal Auditor (External)
Typically 8-12 years in internal audit, with a focus on financial controls.Skills to master
- You'd need to transition from an 'assurance' mindset to a 'design and build' mindset. This means moving beyond just identifying issues to actively designing and implementing solutions. Experience with GRC platforms and regulatory interpretation is key.
You're ready to move on when
- Strong track record of identifying significant control deficiencies and recommending practical solutions.
- Experience working closely with business units to improve control environments.
- Demonstrable understanding of financial regulations and their practical application.
- A desire to move from an advisory role to a direct ownership role for control effectiveness.
- 3
From Financial Risk Manager (External)
Roughly 8-12 years in financial risk management, focusing on operational risk or control assurance.Skills to master
- You'd need to deepen your understanding of specific financial compliance regulations and control frameworks (e.g., SOX). Your risk assessment skills will be highly valued, but you'll need to apply them to tangible control design and implementation.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven ability to assess and quantify financial risks effectively.
- Experience in developing risk mitigation strategies and monitoring their effectiveness.
- Familiarity with financial reporting processes and related controls.
- A proactive approach to risk management and a desire to build robust preventative measures.
