The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Facilities Specialist to Senior Facilities Assistant
2-3 years as a Facilities SpecialistSkills to master
- Independent 'work order' management, routine 'PPM' execution, basic 'vendor management', and a solid grasp of site-specific 'H&S compliance'. You'll need to show initiative and problem-solving skills beyond just following instructions.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding 'SLA's for 'work order' completion.
- Proactively identifying and resolving minor issues during 'daily tours/walk-throughs'.
- Taking ownership of specific facilities processes (e.g., 'asset tagging', key management).
- Informally mentoring new joiners or less experienced colleagues.
- Successfully managing small, self-contained projects (e.g., office clear-outs, minor furniture moves).
- 2
Facilities Coordinator (Large Site) to Senior Facilities Assistant
3-4 years as a Facilities Coordinator at a large, complex siteSkills to master
- Managing a high volume of diverse requests, coordinating multiple vendors simultaneously, strong communication with a wide range of 'stakeholders', and a deep understanding of the site's unique operational challenges.
You're ready to move on when
- Being the recognised 'go-to' person for complex operational queries at your site.
- Demonstrating exceptional organisational skills in a high-pressure environment.
- Successfully de-escalating difficult situations with colleagues or vendors.
- Identifying and proposing improvements to existing facilities processes.
- Taking on additional responsibilities beyond your core role, showing leadership potential.
- 3
Building Services Technician to Senior Facilities Assistant
4-6 years as a skilled technician (e.g., HVAC, Electrical)Skills to master
- While you'll have excellent technical skills, you'll need to develop broader 'vendor management', 'OPEX/CAPEX' understanding, and 'stakeholder management' skills. It's about moving from doing the work to managing the overall operation.
You're ready to move on when
- Showing interest in the administrative and coordination aspects of facilities.
- Taking initiative to train less experienced technicians.
- Proactively suggesting improvements to 'PPM schedules' or maintenance procedures.
- Demonstrating strong communication skills beyond technical discussions.
- Understanding the business impact of facilities decisions, not just the technical aspects.
