The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Facilities Specialist (L2)
2-3 years as an L2Skills to master
- You'd need to master independent process ownership, consistently deliver on routine tasks, and start demonstrating initiative in identifying and proposing solutions. Getting comfortable with basic vendor interaction and H&S compliance is key.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeds expectations on work order SLA compliance and vendor invoice accuracy.
- Has successfully taken ownership of a specific facilities process (e.g., new hire desk setup) and made it more efficient.
- Proactively identifies and resolves issues without constant supervision.
- Has shown an interest in mentoring new joiners or taking on more complex tasks.
- 2
From a Related Trade or Technical Role
5-7 years in a trade (e.g., electrician, HVAC technician) plus 1-2 years in a coordination roleSkills to master
- You'd need to translate your technical expertise into broader facilities management. This means developing strong administrative skills, learning our IWMS and ERP systems, understanding vendor management from a client perspective, and getting a solid grasp of H&S regulations beyond your specific trade.
You're ready to move on when
- Demonstrates excellent technical problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of building systems.
- Has taken on some administrative or coordination tasks in their previous role (e.g., scheduling, ordering parts).
- Shows strong communication skills and an ability to interact professionally with diverse stakeholders.
- Is keen to move into a more holistic management role rather than purely technical execution.
- 3
From Project Coordinator (Non-Facilities)
3-5 years in project coordination plus 1-2 years in a facilities-adjacent roleSkills to master
- You'd need to adapt your project management skills to the unique context of facilities – understanding building systems, H&S compliance, and the specific challenges of managing physical spaces. Learning our core facilities tech stack and vendor ecosystem would be critical.
You're ready to move on when
- Has a proven track record of delivering projects on time and budget in a different domain.
- Demonstrates strong organisational and communication skills.
- Shows a genuine interest in the built environment and facilities operations.
- Is a quick learner and can pick up new industry-specific knowledge and systems rapidly.
