How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Carbon Reduction Specialist (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- Moving from executing tasks to leading workstreams. Developing strong business case writing and presentation skills. Proving your ability to manage external consultants and mentor junior staff.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering on portfolio EUI reduction targets for your assigned buildings.
- Successfully leading smaller ECM projects (<£100K) from start to finish.
- Proactively identifying and proposing solutions to complex data or operational challenges.
- Demonstrating strong communication with Facilities Managers and property teams.

From Energy Manager (External)
5-7 years experience in a similar roleSkills to master
- Adapting to our specific portfolio and organisational structure. Understanding our internal capital planning and approval processes. Familiarising yourself with our particular tech stack and data systems.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven experience managing a diverse portfolio of commercial properties.
- Track record of identifying, developing, and delivering significant energy reduction projects.
- Strong financial acumen for building compelling business cases.
- Experience with GRESB or similar ESG reporting frameworks.

From Sustainability Consultant (External)
5-8 years experience, with a focus on real estateSkills to master
- Transitioning from advisory to direct implementation and ownership. Building internal stakeholder relationships. Understanding the operational realities and constraints of an owner/operator.
You're ready to move on when
- Extensive experience in GHG accounting and M&V for real estate clients.
- Demonstrated ability to translate technical recommendations into actionable plans.
- Strong project management skills, even if in a client-facing capacity.
- A genuine desire to 'own' the problem and see projects through to completion.
