The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Sustainability Analyst (L2)
2-3 years as an L2Skills to master
- Moving from owning a data stream to leading a full programme. This means developing stronger project management, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving skills, and starting to mentor junior colleagues.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering accurate and timely reports for your owned data streams with minimal oversight.
- Proactively identifying and proposing solutions to data quality issues or process inefficiencies.
- Successfully guiding new team members on complex tasks or methodologies.
- Demonstrating initiative by taking on more complex projects or sections of external reports.
- 2
From Environmental Consultant
5-7 years in consultingSkills to master
- Adapting from project-based consulting to embedded corporate roles. This means understanding internal politics, building long-term relationships, and navigating internal systems rather than just delivering a report. You'll need to develop a deeper understanding of our specific operations.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing projects for multiple clients, demonstrating strong organisational skills.
- Proven ability to interpret complex regulations and provide practical advice.
- Strong communication skills, especially in presenting findings to clients.
- A desire to move from advisory to hands-on implementation and ownership within one organisation.
- 3
From EHS Specialist/Manager
5-8 years in EHSSkills to master
- Broadening your focus from traditional EHS (e.g., safety, pollution control) to wider sustainability issues like ESG reporting, climate change, and social impact. This requires learning new frameworks and thinking more strategically about external perception.
You're ready to move on when
- Strong track record in managing environmental compliance programmes (e.g., waste, water, air).
- Experience with ISO 14001 implementation and auditing.
- A keen interest in expanding into broader sustainability and ESG topics.
- Ability to translate technical EHS information into business-relevant insights.
