The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Sustainability Specialist (L2)

You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering high-quality work on time and with minimal supervision.
- Proactively identifying and proposing solutions to problems within your domain.
- Successfully managing small, discrete projects from start to finish.
- Being the 'go-to' person for a specific data stream or reporting area.
- Demonstrating an ability to communicate complex information clearly to non-experts.
- 2
From ESG/Sustainability Consultant
5-7 years in consultingSkills to master
- Adapting consulting experience to an in-house operational context, understanding internal politics, and building long-term relationships rather than project-based ones.
You're ready to move on when
- Experience managing client projects and delivering measurable outcomes.
- Strong technical skills in areas like GHG accounting, LCA, or materiality assessments.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse client teams.
- A desire to embed deeply within one organisation and drive change from within, rather than advising externally.
- 3
From Environmental Compliance/EHS Manager
6-9 years in EHSSkills to master

You're ready to move on when

- Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills.
- A clear interest in expanding into broader ESG topics and strategic sustainability planning.
