The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Change Specialist (Level 002)
2-3 years at Level 002Skills to master
- Mastering end-to-end change workstream ownership, taking initiative on problem-solving, and demonstrating strong stakeholder engagement for smaller projects. You'd be showing you're ready to tackle bigger, more complex challenges.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully owned and delivered change for 3-5 medium-sized projects with minimal supervision.
- Consistently received positive feedback on communication and stakeholder engagement.
- Proactively identified and mitigated resistance on projects, showing initiative beyond simple execution.
- Demonstrated an ability to mentor and guide newer team members informally.
- 2
From Project Manager or Business Analyst
5-7 years in PM/BA with significant change exposureSkills to master
- You'd need to demonstrate a strong understanding of the human side of change, not just the technical or process side. This means deep skills in communication, stakeholder management, and resistance tactics, often gained from leading the 'people' elements of projects.
You're ready to move on when
- Actively led the 'people' workstreams within large projects, even if your title wasn't 'Change Manager'.
- Can articulate how you've used change management principles to drive adoption and overcome resistance.
- Strong track record of influencing project outcomes through people-focused interventions.
- Completed a recognised change management certification (e.g., Prosci, APMG).
- 3
From HR Business Partner or Organisational Development
5-7 years in HRBP/OD with focus on transformationSkills to master
- You'd bring a deep understanding of organisational dynamics and employee behaviour. You'd need to layer on structured change methodologies, project integration skills, and a more data-driven approach to adoption and resistance.
You're ready to move on when
- Played a key role in supporting major organisational restructures or system implementations from an HR perspective.
- Can demonstrate how you've influenced leaders to manage change effectively within their teams.
- Strong skills in employee engagement, communication, and talent development during periods of change.
- A keen interest in the practical, day-to-day execution of change plans, not just strategy.
