The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Manager, Global Process Excellence (Internal Promotion)
Typically 3-5 years as a Manager at Level 5.Skills to master
- Mastering P&L management for a significant department, leading multiple large-scale transformation programmes concurrently, developing a strong external network, and demonstrating executive presence in client and internal C-suite interactions. You'll need to show you can operate at a strategic, not just managerial, level.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding departmental P&L targets for several years.
- Successfully leading the launch of 1-2 new service offerings.
- Receiving strong feedback from C-suite clients on your strategic advice and programme leadership.
- Building and retaining a high-performing team of managers and architects.
- Actively contributing to the overall business unit strategy, not just executing it.

- Shifting from an advisory role to an executive operational role with direct P&L accountability. This means getting hands-on with execution, managing internal teams, and owning outcomes beyond just recommendations. You'll need to demonstrate you can build and run, not just advise.
You're ready to move on when
- Extensive experience leading large-scale BPO transformation programmes for multiple clients.
- Strong relationships with C-suite executives in the BPO or relevant industries.
- Demonstrated ability to transition from a consulting mindset to an operational leadership mindset.
