The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
From Warehouse Team Lead / Supervisor

- Mastering shift management, basic process improvement, team coaching, and hitting daily KPIs. You'll need to show you can take full ownership of a small team's output.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently exceeding team productivity and accuracy targets.
- Successfully training new team members and seeing them perform well.
- Proactively identifying and solving recurring operational problems within your team's scope.
- Taking initiative on projects outside your core duties, showing leadership potential.
- 2
From Operations Analyst (with floor experience)
4-6 years as an Analyst + some operational exposureSkills to master
- Deep data analysis, process mapping, understanding operational drivers, and translating insights into actionable plans. You'd need to have spent some time on the floor, not just behind a desk.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully leading projects to optimise specific warehouse processes using data.
- Building strong relationships with operational teams and understanding their day-to-day challenges.
- Demonstrating the ability to implement changes you've recommended, not just analyse them.
- Showing a clear interest and aptitude for people management and leadership.
- 3
From Logistics Coordinator / Planner
5-7 years in logistics planning rolesSkills to master
- Understanding inbound/outbound logistics, carrier management, inventory planning, and how these impact warehouse operations. You'll need to bridge the gap between planning and execution.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully optimising transport routes or inventory levels, directly benefiting warehouse efficiency.
- Proactively collaborating with warehouse teams to resolve issues before they escalate.
- Demonstrating strong problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Showing a desire to move from planning to direct operational leadership.
