How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From 5G Specialist / RF Engineer (L2)
2-3 years at L2Skills to master
- You'll need to master independent troubleshooting, take ownership of entire network clusters, and start proactively identifying optimisation opportunities. Getting comfortable with more complex tools and starting to mentor informally are key steps.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently resolving Tier 2 trouble tickets within SLA without constant supervision.
- Successfully leading smaller, well-defined optimisation tasks (e.g., specific parameter tuning).
- Demonstrating a solid grasp of E2E call flows and basic interference hunting techniques.
- Being the informal 'go-to' person for newer team members on routine technical queries.

From Network Performance Engineer (other domains)
3-5 years in a related domainSkills to master
- You'll need to rapidly get up to speed on 5G NR air interface specifics, 3GPP standards, and the unique challenges of radio network optimisation. Your strong E2E troubleshooting and data analysis skills will be transferable, but the RF domain is a steep learning curve.
You're ready to move on when
- A strong foundational understanding of wireless communication principles.
- Proven experience with performance monitoring tools and data analytics in a network context.
- A demonstrable passion for learning 5G technology, perhaps through personal projects or certifications.
- Excellent problem-solving skills that can be applied to a new technical domain.
