How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

Associate Robotics Technician (L1)
2-3 yearsSkills to master
- Mastering basic robot operation, fault clearing, routine PMs, and accurate documentation. Learning to work safely and effectively under supervision.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently completing PM tasks on time and accurately.
- Successfully clearing common Tier 1 robot faults independently.
- Demonstrating a strong understanding of LOTO procedures.
- Proactively asking questions and showing a desire to learn more complex systems.

Industrial Maintenance Electrician/Mechanic
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- Developing strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills, reading complex schematics, and gaining experience with various industrial machinery. You'd then specialise in robotics.
You're ready to move on when
- Proven ability to diagnose and repair complex electrical and mechanical faults on plant equipment.
- Strong understanding of PLC hardware and basic I/O diagnostics.
- A keen interest in automation and a desire to specialise in robotics.
- Experience with safety systems and LOTO.

Apprenticeship in Mechatronics/Automation
4-5 years (including formal training)Skills to master
- Gaining a broad understanding of mechanical, electrical, and control systems through a structured programme, often with integrated work experience. This provides a solid foundation.
You're ready to move on when
- Completion of a recognised apprenticeship programme.
- Demonstrated practical skills across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Strong problem-solving abilities developed through real-world projects.
- A clear passion for robotics and automation.
