- Leading complex engagements, mentoring junior staff, developing initial custom scripts, and demonstrating a deep understanding of multiple attack surfaces. You'll need to show you can handle the non-routine.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivers high-quality, in-depth penetration test reports.
- Actively mentors 1-2 junior team members, helping them grow their skills.
- Has developed and contributed at least one useful internal tool or script.
- Recognised as a technical expert in a specific domain by peers.
- Proactively researches new TTPs and shares findings with the team.

Staff Security Engineer (External Hire)
8-12 years in a hands-on security engineering or research role at another companySkills to master
- While not strictly a penetration tester, this role would involve deep technical security work, potentially including vulnerability research, security architecture review, or incident response. The key is a strong offensive mindset and hands-on technical depth.
You're ready to move on when
- Strong portfolio of security research, open-source contributions, or CTF achievements.
- Experience designing and implementing security controls from an attacker's perspective.
- Proven ability to identify and exploit complex vulnerabilities in production systems.
- Excellent communication skills for translating technical risk to different audiences.

8-12 years in a consulting firm, focusing on advanced penetration testing or red teamingSkills to master

- Track record of successfully leading complex client engagements.
