3What this role really is

A channel coordinator handles the admin behind partner accounts, keeping paperwork and processes on track for resellers and distributors. The role is often the first point of contact for partners with operational queries, helping them find their way around systems and get the support they need. It gives a grounding in how partner relationships work, and can lead into channel sales.

4What you'd actually use

The tools this job runs on, and how well you'd need to know each one.

You'll use this daily to process deal registrations, update partner records, and run basic reports on partner activity. You'll need to know how to navigate the system and input data accurately.

You'll use Excel to create simple partner scorecards, track MDF budgets, and clean up data exports from CRM. Knowing how to use basic formulas and pivot tables will be a huge advantage.

Microsoft Outlook / Gmail Advanced

Email is your primary communication tool with partners and internal teams. You'll need to manage your inbox efficiently, draft clear emails, and use calendar functions effectively.

Microsoft Teams / Slack Intermediate

You'll use these for internal team communication, quick queries, and sometimes for partner collaboration. Knowing how to use channels, direct messages, and basic file sharing is important.

5What you get to decide, and how that grows

Power in a job isn't your title. It's what you're allowed to decide. Here's how it grows as you move up.

The choiceComing in Where you are nowThe step above
Deal Registration Approval You'll process the registration and flag any issues (e.g., existing account, missing info). Final approval is made by an Associate Channel Manager or Channel Account Manager. You can approve routine deal registrations that meet all criteria. You'll escalate any conflicts or complex scenarios. You'll make final decisions on complex deal registrations, including managing potential conflicts and exceptions.
MDF Claim Approval You'll verify the claim against the approved proposal and proof-of-performance. Any discrepancies or approval for payment is escalated to your manager. You can approve routine MDF claims that meet all criteria. You'll flag any issues or requests for exceptions to your manager. You'll approve MDF claims, manage exceptions, and make decisions on budget allocation for your portfolio of partners.
Partner Onboarding Process You'll execute specific tasks within the onboarding checklist (e.g., setting up portal access, sending welcome emails) under guidance. You'll own the end-to-end onboarding process for a segment of partners, ensuring all steps are completed and issues are resolved. You'll design and optimise the onboarding process for new partners, making strategic decisions on content and automation.

6How you'll be judged

The scoreboard, and what is not on it. The hard targets, how often each is actually looked at, and the quiet signals that never reach a dashboard.

Deal Registration SLA Adherence
This measures how quickly you process new deal registrations submitted by partners.
Target · 98% of registrations approved or rejected within 4 business hours.

If 100 deal registrations come in during the week, you'll need to action at least 98 of them within four hours of receipt. Missing a few here and there is okay, but consistently hitting this target shows you're on top of things.

MDF Claim Processing Accuracy
This tracks how accurately you process Market Development Fund (MDF) claims from partners.
Target · <2% error rate on payment processing.

Out of 50 MDF claims processed in a month, you should have no more than one error (e.g., wrong amount, incorrect partner details). Getting this right is crucial because it directly impacts partner payments.

Partner Onboarding Task Completion Rate
This looks at how many of the onboarding tasks you're assigned for new partners you complete on time.
Target · 95% of assigned onboarding tasks completed within agreed timelines.

If a new partner needs 10 specific setup tasks completed (e.g., portal access, welcome kit sent) and you're assigned 5 of them, you'll need to get 4 or 5 done by their deadlines. It's all about making that first impression count.

CRM Data Quality for Partner Records
This measures the accuracy and completeness of partner information in our CRM/PRM system.
Target · Maintain 90%+ data accuracy for key partner fields (e.g., contact info, tier status, address).

When we run a report on partner contact details, less than 10% of records should have missing or incorrect phone numbers or email addresses. Clean data means our sales team can actually reach partners.

Partner Satisfaction (Admin Support)
This is about how happy partners are with the administrative support you provide. Are you responsive and helpful?
  • Feedback from Channel Account Managers and direct partner emails. We'll look for comments like 'always quick to respond' or 'really helped me sort out that issue'. If partners are consistently coming back to you with positive remarks, you're doing well. It's not about being best friends, but about being reliable and easy to work with.
Proactive Problem Identification
Do you spot potential issues before they become big problems? This means noticing patterns or flags in the data you're processing.
  • Bringing potential issues to your manager's attention (e.g., 'I've noticed a lot of partners are struggling with this specific part of the deal registration form, maybe we should update it?'). It's about showing you're thinking beyond just processing tasks, even at this early stage.
Internal Team Collaboration & Support
How well do you work with your immediate team and other internal departments to get things done for partners?
  • Feedback from your manager and peers. Are you easy to work with? Do you follow up on requests? Are you a good team player, helping out when needed? We'll notice if you're a bottleneck or a helpful resource.

7Would you like it

Both sides. What people enjoy, and what grinds them down.

What people enjoy
Providing Clear Support

You'll spend your days answering partner queries, processing their requests, and ensuring they have the information they need. It's about being the reliable point of contact for operational tasks.

A partner rings up confused about a form, and you patiently walk them through it, making sure they understand. That feeling of genuinely helping someone navigate a tricky process is what drives you.

Working in a Structured Environment

This role has clear processes and guidelines for most tasks. You'll follow established procedures for deal registrations, MDF claims, and onboarding, which means less ambiguity and more predictability.

You appreciate having a step-by-step checklist for onboarding a new partner, ensuring you don't miss anything important. You like knowing what's expected and how to achieve it.

Learning a New Industry

You'll be exposed to the fundamentals of channel sales, learning about partner programmes, deal cycles, and how a sales organisation works with indirect channels. It's a great stepping stone.

You're keen to understand the 'why' behind the processes, asking your manager about the strategic importance of deal registration or how MDF impacts partner behaviour. You want to build a career here.

What frustrates people
  • Chasing partners for missing information on forms (it happens a lot).
  • Dealing with urgent requests that turn out not to be that urgent.
  • The occasional internal system glitch that slows everything down.
  • Explaining the same process multiple times to different partners.
What this role does not give you
  • Direct ownership of a sales quota (that comes later).
  • Strategic decision-making authority (you'll execute, not define).
  • Frequent travel or client-facing presentations (mostly internal/partner comms).
  • A 'blank canvas' where you can invent your own processes (we have established ones).

8Who you work with

Your work ensures our channel sales engine runs smoothly on a day-to-day basis. By handling the administrative load, you free up our more senior Channel Account Managers to focus on building relationships and closing deals. If you do your job well, partners get paid on time, deals are registered correctly, and onboarding is a breeze, all of which directly contributes to our overall channel revenue and partner satisfaction. Honestly, it's the glue that holds a lot of our channel operations together.

Inside the business
  • Associate Channel Managers (your immediate team)
  • Channel Account Managers (the folks you'll support daily)
  • Sales Operations (they own the systems you'll use)
  • Finance (for anything to do with partner payments or MDF claims)
  • Marketing (you'll help with partner marketing material distribution)
Outside the business
  • Channel Partners (your main external contacts for admin queries)
  • Distributors (for order status checks and basic queries)

9What you need before you start

Not a wish list. The things you would be expected to already have.

  • A solid grasp of English, both written and spoken, for clear communication with partners and internal teams.
  • Proven ability to work accurately with data and follow detailed instructions, perhaps from previous administrative or support roles.
  • A genuine interest in starting a career in sales or channel management, showing you're not just looking for 'a job' but 'this job'.
  • Basic computer literacy—you can navigate Windows/Mac, use email, and work with spreadsheets without getting lost.

10What to practise next

Where the job is going, and what to do about it starting this week.

Advanced CRM Reporting & Dashboard Building

As you progress, you'll move from pulling pre-built reports to customising them and even building simple dashboards. This helps the team get quicker insights without relying on Sales Ops for every request.

Custom Report Types · Filters & Groupings · Dashboard Components · Scheduled Reports

  • This week: Explore the existing reports in Salesforce. Try to understand how they were built.
  • Next month: Ask Sales Ops if you can shadow them while they build a custom report or dashboard.
  • Month 3: Practice creating a new custom report based on a specific question your manager has.
  • Month 4: Try to build a simple dashboard for your own use, tracking the metrics most relevant to your tasks.

Quick win: Whenever you need a specific piece of data, try to find or create the report yourself first, instead of asking someone else.

11Staying current once you are in

What people here do to keep up
  • Take online courses on platforms like LinkedIn Learning or Udemy covering topics like 'Excel for Business', 'Introduction to Salesforce', or 'Effective Business Communication'.
  • Read books or articles on channel sales or partner management to start building your industry knowledge.
  • Seek out opportunities to shadow more experienced team members, especially those in Sales Operations or Channel Account Management, to see how they work.
  • Attend any internal training sessions offered on our CRM or other business systems, even if you think you know the basics.

The ten Future Fluencies

The credential is what you can do today. These are what keep you valuable.

A qualification proves you can do the job as it's defined today. These ten are what decide whether you're still the obvious person for it in five years. The highlighted ones are the Fluencies your role leans on hardest, from how Channel Coordinator is actually changing.
