The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

From Senior Maintenance Strategist (Internal)
3-5 years as a Senior Strategist (L3) or Lead Strategist (L4)Skills to master
- You'd need to have truly mastered leading complex workstreams, mentoring junior colleagues, and demonstrating strong influence across different departments. Budget management for specific projects and presenting to mid-level management would be crucial.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led 2-3 major maintenance strategy projects from concept to implementation, with measurable impact.
- Consistently received strong feedback on your ability to mentor and develop junior team members.
- Demonstrated a clear understanding of the financial implications of maintenance decisions, beyond just the technical aspects.
- Proactively identified and proposed strategic improvements that were adopted by the organisation.
- 2

- Experience managing a significant functional budget and delivering against financial targets.
- Demonstrable success in implementing global or large-scale maintenance programmes.
- Strong references highlighting your leadership, influence, and strategic acumen.
- 3
From Consulting (Specialised FM/Asset Management)
Roughly 5-7 years in a senior consultant or principal consultant role, specialising in facilities or asset management strategy.Skills to master
- You'd bring strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. You'd need to develop a deeper understanding of 'in-house' operational realities, team management, and long-term ownership, moving beyond project-based engagements.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully delivered multiple strategic FM projects for large clients.
- Experience leading project teams and managing client relationships at a senior level.
- A clear understanding of how to transition from advisory to direct operational leadership.
