3-5 years as a Lead or SupervisorSkills to master
- Transitioning from leading a team or a specific quality system to managing an entire department. This means developing strong budget management skills, strategic planning, and a broader understanding of operational interdependencies. You'll need to move from technical ownership to functional ownership.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed a team of 3-8 quality professionals for at least 2 years, demonstrating strong people management skills.
- Led multiple complex Lean Six Sigma Black Belt projects with demonstrable impact on quality metrics.
- Played a significant role in preparing for and hosting external audits, taking accountability for specific sections.
- Consistently demonstrated strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities for non-routine quality issues.

From Senior Quality Engineer (L3) with exceptional leadership potential
5-7 years as a Senior Engineer, often with an accelerated development planSkills to master
- This path requires a significant leap in leadership, strategic thinking, and business acumen. You'd need to quickly develop budget management, organisational design, and high-level stakeholder influence. Often, this involves taking on interim management roles or leading major cross-functional initiatives.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently mentored junior engineers and demonstrated informal leadership skills beyond your core responsibilities.
- Owned and successfully delivered multiple critical quality improvement projects end-to-end.
- Actively sought out opportunities to present to and influence senior leadership.
- Proactively identified and proposed solutions to systemic quality issues, demonstrating a strategic mindset.
