The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Lead Sourcing Manager / Principal Category Manager (L4)
3-5 yearsSkills to master
- You'd need to have truly mastered a portfolio of complex categories, designed multi-year strategies, and proven your ability to mentor others. It's about being a recognised subject matter expert and a leader without necessarily having direct reports.
You're ready to move on when
- Consistently delivering significant category savings (£15M+ annually).
- Successfully leading cross-functional projects with high-level stakeholders.
- Mentoring junior colleagues and being sought out for advice.
- Developing and implementing multi-year category strategies independently.
- 2
Senior Category Manager in a Larger Organisation
4-6 yearsSkills to master
- If you're coming from a much bigger company, you might have managed a substantial category with a smaller team. The key here is demonstrating the scale of your impact and your leadership capabilities in a more matrixed environment.
You're ready to move on when
- Managing a category spend of £100M+ with demonstrable P&L impact.
- Experience with global sourcing strategies.
- Proven ability to influence senior business leaders.
- Some informal leadership or project leadership experience.
- 3
Management Consultant (Specialising in Procurement/Supply Chain)
5-8 yearsSkills to master
- Consultants often bring strong strategic thinking, project management, and stakeholder influence skills. You'd need to translate that into hands-on operational leadership and team development, showing you can actually 'do' as well as 'advise'.
You're ready to move on when
- Leading complex procurement transformation projects for clients.
- Developing and presenting strategic recommendations to C-suite clients.
- Experience managing project teams and client relationships.
- A desire to move from advising to directly owning and executing.
