How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.

3-5 years as an L3Skills to master
- Leading complex CAPA projects, mentoring junior engineers, making sound technical decisions, presenting findings to mid-level management, and demonstrating a strong grasp of Lean Six Sigma principles.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully led at least 5-7 major quality improvement projects with measurable results.
- Consistently sought out for technical advice by peers and production teams.
- Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
- Mentored at least 1-2 junior engineers who have shown significant growth.

Manufacturing/Process Engineer with Quality Specialisation
5-8 years in engineering, then 2-3 years focused on quality projectsSkills to master
- Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, strong problem-solving skills, experience with process optimisation, and a solid foundation in statistical methods and RCA techniques.
You're ready to move on when
- Led significant process improvement initiatives that directly impacted product quality.
- Took ownership of quality-related issues within their engineering role, driving them to resolution.
- Completed Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
- Expressed a clear desire to specialise in quality assurance and leadership.
