The pathway
How you actually get there, here
How you become one varies far more by country than what one does. This is the UK route. Most people take one of these ways in; the right one depends on where you're starting from.
- 1
Lead Workplace Manager / Regional Facilities Manager (L4)
3-5 years in roleSkills to master
- At this level, you'd have been managing multiple sites or a very large single facility, overseeing smaller budgets (up to £500K), and leading small teams or complex projects. You'd have mastered day-to-day operations and started dipping your toes into strategic planning and vendor negotiations.
You're ready to move on when
- Successfully managed a team of at least 5-8 individual contributors.
- Delivered 2-3 significant projects (e.g., office relocation, major system implementation) on time and within budget.
- Consistently maintained operational budget within 3% variance.
- Developed and maintained strong relationships with key regional vendors.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders on operational improvements.
- 2
Senior Facilities Consultant (from external)
5-8 years consulting experienceSkills to master
- Coming from a consultancy, you'd have advised multiple clients on facilities strategy, space optimisation, and operational efficiency. You'd bring a broad perspective and strong analytical skills, but might need to adapt to the hands-on, P&L ownership of an in-house role.
You're ready to move on when
- Led multiple client engagements related to workplace strategy or facilities optimisation.
- Developed and presented strategic recommendations to C-suite level clients.
- Managed project teams and deliverables in a client-facing environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on data-driven insights.
- A solid understanding of commercial real estate and facilities best practices.
- 3
Head of Operations (from smaller company)
5-7 years in roleSkills to master
- In a smaller organisation, you might have had broader operational responsibilities, including facilities, IT, and administrative functions. You'd bring strong general management and problem-solving skills, but might need to specialise your facilities knowledge and scale up your team leadership.
You're ready to move on when
- Managed a diverse operational team across multiple functions.
- Owned a significant operational budget and P&L.
- Implemented new operational processes that drove efficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-growing environment.
- Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities in a resource-constrained setting.
